Imagine feeling an immense pain just below your stomach that causes you to be sent immediately to the emergency room; and for your emergency physician to discover that you have a 13cm tumor wrapped tightly around one of your ovaries. This is exactly what Joan McFarlane Carter, affectionately known as "Blossom", experienced on July 2, 2020. Her emergency surgery to remove the tumor was successful. Two weeks later she was notified that her tumor was cancerous; Blossom was informed that she had ovarian cancer. A comparison of CT scans from two weeks prior showed cancer cells rapidly advancing from microscopic (not visible to the eye) to over an inch in length. This extremely aggressive cancer and rapid growth rate changed Blossom's care plan to start chemotherapy as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the cancer cells were growing significantly every day and chemotherapy was not effective. To the shock and dismay of her loved ones, Blossom passed away on August 25, 2020, at 57 years old. She leaves precious memories to her husband, children, sisters, extended family, church family and friends.
