Jared Keyes Mr. Freshmen Scholarship

Jared Keyes Mr. Freshman Scholarship Why did I create this scholarship?"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela. The Jared Keyes Mr. Freshman scholarship was created to help incoming freshmen achieve their dreams of attending college a reality. It is designed to help start the education of the next community leader. When I entered Jackson State University in the fall of 2018, I did not have any financial support. I was disappointed, but I still felt at home here at Jackson State University. As I have matriculated through JSU, I realized that I wasn’t the only freshman in this situation. I thought to myself that the change must start with me. My goal is to impact as many lives as I can, starting with this scholarship. I believe that God has brought me to this University to leave a legacy on the community, and it starts now.

The Debate Team is in its infancy, and this upcoming year will be our 4th year officially within the W.E.B Dubois-- Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey Honors College. Though we are new, we have already begun to establish ourselves within the debate tournaments we attend. We currently debate within the International Public Debate Association(IPDA). This format is used by numerous schools in the South, however, our JSU team is one of the very few representing Mississippi. Since our creation, we have had a team member place in the octofinals and semifinals at every debate we have attended. We have also had a debater achieve the title of “Best Speaker” for her tier of the tournament, which means she scored highest among her competitors in essential debate skills. Since then, two other students have received that honor and placed in the debates we attended. At the first annual HBCU debate tournament, one of our students placed second overall. As our team goes to more and more debates, we are constantly improving, and we believe going to more debates per semester is an integral part of our growth. Our team is very committed and talented. We have a diverse group of majors and classifications, and all are ignited by the work we do in our debate team. All students are honors students who regularly embody the academic excellence that our great university strives for and cultivates. Three of our team members competed in a national competition to raise awareness about the national debt and won 1st place out of 75 schools. Sufficeth to say, our team is proactive in representing the excellence and prestige of Jackson State University in every part of our academic and extracurricular life. In order to continue improving as a team, we are in need of funding and support. As stated before, we believe that going to debates consistently will increase our standing and skills as debaters. Our goal is to go to as many as 4 debates a semester, and eventually explore new formats of debate to expand our reach across the country. We are one of the few teams representing Mississippi, so we not only want to represent our university well, but also our state as a whole. We truly believe we can represent you well, and so we ask for any support you can give us. Anything you can do for us is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your participation in our growth. Your support is greatly appreciated!

JSU Global will celebrate its annual International Week Monday April 10, through Friday, April 13. International Week is one of Jackson State University’s most anticipated events. It promotes global awareness of the many cultures represented on JSU's campus and the world through educational and entertaining activities. It allows for all Mississippians to celebrate and show appreciation for diversity, collectively. There are more than 60 countries represented at JSU. International Week showcases the campus’ diversity and increases awareness of and appreciation for everyone in our global community. As a part of our celebration, JSU Global incorporates a variety of activities, including the opening ceremony, parade of flags, bazaar and our scholarship gala. Culminating the four days of celebration is the International Scholarship and Community Awards Gala. This year’s gala will honor Dr. Ally Mack for her outstanding contributions to global education. Dr. Mack continues to be a beacon of light and source of knowledge not only for JSU but the entire international community. The Richard Wright Center

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Richard Wright Center for Writing, Rhetoric, and Research. At JSU we all write! And all writers need feedback. The Richard Wright Center is a campus-wide and community resource that supports students, faculty, and staff in their efforts to become better writers, speakers, and researchers, and it is central to the larger mission of Jackson State University. Led by Director, Dr. Kathi Griffin, and Coordinator, Dr. Tatiana Glushko, the Richard Wright Center provides an environment for intellectual engagement where JSU students of all levels and disciplines can engage in one-to-one conversations about their academic written, oral, visual, and research projects and receive feedback from trained peer tutors. Richard Wright Center tutors create a unique educational environment that facilitates peer learning, collaboration, reflection, and critical thinking—hallmarks of excellent higher education. We invite you to support and sustain the efforts of our tutors. With your support, we plan to Increase the number of trained peer tutors in writing from 7 to 25 Provide stipends for professional development opportunities, such as conference attendance and participation, research and writing articles for publication, and more. Your support will also allow us to promote writing on campus through hosting open-house gatherings, developing and producing a semiannual newsletter, hosting recruitment gatherings, end-of-year celebrations, and possibly bringing writing scholars and Richard Wright Center alumni to campus. When you donate to the Richard Wright Center, you help strengthen and grow the sense of intellectual, professional community among students within the center and across campus.
