Alden 'AW' Jackson On April 2, 2019, artist, educator, and family man, Alden 'AW' Jackson, 93, passed away peacefully in the presence of his spouse and daughter in his home in Capitol Heights, MD after a multi-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. AW is survived by his spouse, Deanna Burruss Jackson, two children, two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. AW was born in Charlottesville, VA in 1925. He was the son of John Andrew and Otelia Love Jackson, and a brother to John Andrew (II), Gloria, Ellard, George Franklin, Love, and Elwood Jackson, who all preceded him in death. AW entered the Army in 1943 and served in the Pacific until 1945. After returning from WWII, he completed his Bachelor’s degree at North Carolina Central University. After graduating, he returned to Charlottesville, VA, where he took care of his aging parents and volunteered as the Scoutmaster for a local Boy Scout Troop. Here, he met his lifelong friend, Oliver Anderson, a co-worker in a local frame shop. It’s also where he met his spouse, Deanna Burruss. They married in 1960 and were soon blessed with their first child. The family moved to Orangeburg, SC, where AW’s sister Gloria lived. With her help, he secured a job at South Carolina State College. Soon after they were blessed with their second child. In mid-1965, the family moved to the Washington, DC area, which became his long term home. From the Frame Restoration department of the Smithsonian Institution's National Gallery of Art to teaching art at the Mildred Green Elementary School, to decorating his church, St. Margaret of Scotland, for every major liturgical holiday for over 20 years, AW’s life was infused with his artistic talent and his desire to give to the community. His volunteer work also spanned his life, including being the Cubmaster for the church's Cub Scout Troop and organizing a meal stability project for the community at his church. After retiring from the DC Public Schools, AW attended ceramic classes (his favorite medium) at Prince George’s Community College, enjoying the community and the freedom to explore his own creative path. AW was also prolific gardener, indoors and out. His home was a veritable greenhouse and his gardens included a fish pond. AW’s vegetable gardens always produced a bounty, and he generously donated the surplus to the St. Margaret’s community. Through everything, AW’s family was central in his life. Married almost 60 years, he was extremely proud that his children had earned Ph.D.’s and were accomplished in their respective fields. He was a loving grandparent, always with a kind word of support. His nieces and nephews kept in touch with him as if he were their parent. His warmth and generosity also extended to his children’s friends, to whom he opened his home and heart. AW will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and so many others whose lives he touched. Maxine Crawley Please donate in the name of Maxine Crawley, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. My grandmother was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in October of 2014 and lost her battle with this horrible disease on May 25th, 2019. We never understood why someone so kind-hearted and selfless was dealt such a rough hand, but you would've never known what she was up against. My grandmother was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt to a big, loving family. She enjoyed playing bunco, attending church, and watching her grandkids play everything from baseball to basketball. She was also a die hard University of Kentucky fan. I still don't understand why she was called home so soon, but we continue to keep her memory alive and I know she would want nothing more than to help those who are battling this same disease. God bless! Marty Steller had a terrible battle with a lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. A disease that causes scarring of the lungs. The word 'idiopathic' means it has no known cause. Scarring causes stiffness in the lungs and makes it difficult to breathe. The lung damage from IPF is irreversible and progressive, meaning it gets worse over time and a person's life is short for 3-5 years. Please help Marty continue this battle in his honor by donating to help find cures for others. Phyllis Netherland Phyllis Netherland, 75, of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Beaver, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in her home on April 29, 2019. Phyllis was a grand lady who was constantly seeking enrichment in her life. She was a well-respected radiologic technologist by training and pursued advanced certification as a dedicated MRI technologist later in her career; she was an active member of Toast Masters; an entrepreneur and a member of the Beaver County Historical Society prior to moving to Gettysburg, PA in 2004. Soon after that she became very active in the Adams County Arts Council; a director of the Gettysburg Arts Festival’s Fringe Festival for many years and one of the founding members of her local support group of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. She took her message of educating the public about PF to the airwaves where she was interviewed twice on a local radio station in hopes of reaching those in need. She had dear friends in many places, made new friends with a smile, loved to travel and most of all spend time with her family. One of her friends described her this way: A big smile on a super-pretty face and a look that says, "How wonderful to see you—nothing could make me happier!" Cecil "Sarge" Miller Cecil (Sarge) D Miller, beloved husband of Renee (Stech) Miller crossed over to the promised land at 3:35 pm on March 31, 2018, after fighting his last battle against a devastating lung disease, IPF. Cecil honorably served in the U S Marine Corps and retired as a Lieutenant from the U S Coast Guard. He also retired from the Department of Homeland Security. He served his country in various roles from 1957 until 2008. Cecil was a Zoo Docent Volunteer at Cleveland for 25 years and a Docent at Tampa Lowry Park Zoo for 4 years. He loved animals and was interested in their conservation. Cecil suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a fatal disease that causes scarring of the lungs which robs the IPF patient the ability to breathe and has a 3-5 year life expectancy. "Sarge" fought a hard battle against this disease with humor, strength, and courage. It is a disease in which tissue deep in your lungs becomes thick and stiff, or scarred, over time. The formation of scar tissue is called fibrosis. IPF affects about 128,100 people in the United States, with about 48,000 new cases diagnosed annually. 40,000 people die each year to IPF. Please donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost. All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar raised goes to help support the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. If you cannot make a donation at this time, please forward this e-mail and link to everyone you know. Post this on your Facebook and Twitter pages. Every donation counts, no matter what the amount. The loss of a loved one is devastating. Yet, we are always reminded by our hearts – how lucky we have been to know those that we love even in our loss. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions please contact Jake Meding at jmeding@pulmonaryfibrosis.org or (312)854-2627
