Go to E. A. Merrill

E. A. Merrill

In Memory of E. A. Merrill The word “pulmonary” means lung and the word “fibrosis” means scar tissue— similar to scars that you may have on your skin from an old injury or surgery. So, in its simplest sense, pulmonary fibrosis (PF) means scarring in the lungs. Over time, the scar tissue can destroy the normal lung and make it hard for oxygen to get into your blood. Low oxygen levels (and the stiff scar tissue itself) can cause you to feel short of breath, particularly when walking and exercising. Pulmonary fibrosis isn’t just one disease. It is a family of more than 200 different lung diseases that all look very much alike. The PF family of lung diseases falls into an even larger group of diseases called the interstitial lung diseases (also known as ILD), which includes all of the diseases that have inflammation and/or scarring in the lung. Some interstitial lung diseases don’t include scar tissue. When an interstitial lung disease does include scar tissue in the lung, we call it pulmonary fibrosis. No one is certain how many people are affected by PF. One recent study estimated that idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (or IPF, which is just one of more than 200 types of PF) affects 1 out of 200 adults over the age of 60 and over in the United States—that translates to more than 200,000 people living with PF today. Approximately 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and as many as 40,000 Americans die from IPF each year. Dad's PF was from inhaling fiber glass and asbestos during his career as an insulator at nuclear power plants across the country. The life expectancy of someone with PF is 3-5 years after diagnosis. Dad's diagnosis was a little over 5 years ago. Please donate in the name of E. A. Merrill, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Milton Whitney

Milton Whitney A son, brother, husband, father and grandfather whose greatest love in life was his family and his farm. He enjoyed talking with people, telling stories, country fair food, and ice cream. He loved cutting wood in the winter and baling hay in the summer. He farmed alongside his own father behind a pair of horses. He put new life into old equipment and could fix anything. He passed on this passion to his own children and grandchildren. His perfect day would be morning coffee, talking and reading the newspaper (the stories of interest outloud), the outdoor chores of the season and a family dinner with all his kids and grandkids. In his older years he enjoyed keeping his bird feeders full, maintaining his farm, small engine repair for local townspeople, and visiting with family and friends. His spirit will be missed. Michael had a significant impact on many children during his years with the NY Department of Education as well as the 40 years he owned Staten Island Day Camp. Michael fought his hardest to beat Pulmonary Fibrosis, so we know that he would appreciate that your donations could potentially help others suffering from this disease. Go to Brenda Louise Rice

Brenda Louise Rice

Brenda Louise Rice June 25, 1949-July 29, 2019 Brenda Louise Viers Rice passed away July 29, 2019, at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC, after a five-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She fought the disease bravely alongside her husband, and when her earthly story came to an end, she was surrounded by the people she loved most—her family. Brenda was born June 25, 1949, in Richlands, VA, to Mary Angeline Marshall Viers and Brice Madison Viers, and she and her younger sister, Janice, spent most of their youth in Bristol, TN. She was proud of her family’s humble Appalachian heritage, which strongly influenced her values and the way she lived her life. Brenda found a kindred spirit, and the love of her life, when she married Charlie in 1982, and they moved together to Greensboro in 1992. As her family grew, Brenda remained the rock-solid center of the clan, leading and teaching the younger generations by her quiet example. She adored road trips. She enjoyed warm afternoons tending her garden and watching the birds that came to feed and nest there. And as a lifelong reader, she loved the 18 years she spent working at UNCG’s Jackson Library before retiring in 2014. Brenda’s legacy is the tight-knit family she leaves behind, including her husband of 37 years, Charles Rice; her daughters, Jennifer Strimple and Julie Burnham, and son-in-law, Josh Burnham; her granddaughters, Rachel and Taylor Phillips; her grandsons, Jacob and Sam Strimple; her sister, Janice Jackson, and brother-in-law, Bascom Jackson; and her niece, Amanda Jackson. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, August 2, at Lambeth Troxler Funeral & Cremation Services in Greensboro, with a graveside service to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Brenda also was passionate about finding a cure for pulmonary fibrosis. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org) to help fund research and resources for those living with the disease. All proceeds go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community • Promoting disease awareness • Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their families Please donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost.
