Greg's Daughter, Dr. Maggie Thomas Freeberg is doing research at Virginia Commonwealth University to help find a cure for Pulmonary Fibrosis! He was a long time volunteer with the Boy Scouts, Meals-on-Wheels, Genesee Waterways Center, and the Red Cross (including providing hands-on aid to the victims of Katrina and many other disasters). Even while dealing with Pulmonary Fibrosis, he was involved with Rochester Community Bikes and Empty Bowls, and became a contributor to Rochester’s Sanctuary Village. Greg was the founder of Breathe Easy Rochester, a support group for people with Pulmonary Fibrosis and their caregivers. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. Richard (Dick) Anthony Risio, 79, of Ashaway, RI passed away peacefully at his summer home in West Yarmouth, MA on Saturday, Aug 31, 2019. Dick was born in East Providence, RI to Guido and Catherine (Friel) Risio on Jul 29, 1940. He graduated from LaSalle Academy and URI where he was a proud member of Sigma Chi maintaining lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers. On Dec 14, 1963, he married Nancy (Williamson) Risio, they enjoyed 55 years together, and Nancy was with him when he passed. Together, they raised two daughters, Sue and Naomi, and a son Andrew. Dick lived a life of serving others: he was a proud Army Veteran who served in Vietnam, a public educator for thirty years at Stonington High School, a lifelong commentator at his church and a helping hand any time a neighbor, friend or family member was in need. Always ready for a game of pitch or cribbage, he played with the same circle of friends for over 50 years. He was loved for his wit and fondness for April Fool's practical jokes. His greatest joy was spending time with friends and family. Dick is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Cathy Storti. He is survived by brother Robert Risio and sister Ann Ring, his beloved wife Nancy, daughter Susan Marchal and husband Philip; son Andrew Risio and wife Carmen; and daughter Naomi Warchol and husband Robert. Dick was a loving grandfather to Isabella and Jacqueline Marchal, Christopher and Alexander Risio, and Julia, Helena and Burke Warchol. Special thanks to the staff at Beacon Hospice, Drs. Walter Donat and Warren Licht, as well as many friends and family who helped care for him in his time of need. Robert Ezykowich On September 7, 2019, I watched my Dad go peacefully and be free from all of his suffering. He was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary fibrosis about 10 years ago and I watched his health decline gradually. In its simplest sense, pulmonary fibrosis (PF) means scarring in the lungs. Over time, the scar tissue can destroy the normal lung and make it hard for oxygen to get into your blood. Low oxygen levels (and the stiff scar tissue itself) can cause you to feel short of breath, particularly when walking and exercising. Pulmonary fibrosis isn’t just one disease. It is a family of more than 200 different lung diseases that all look very much alike. The PF family of lung diseases falls into an even larger group of diseases called the interstitial lung diseases (also known as ILD), which includes all of the diseases that have inflammation and/or scarring in the lung. I remember reading about this disease and the life expectancy was 3-5 years. In 2016, he received the gift of life through a lung transplant. Watching him breathe without oxygen and without struggle was the biggest blessing, and something we had imagined for so long. The post transplant life was not easy. After a few short months of good days, he started to have lousy ones again. The months & years that followed were filled with trips to the hospital for stints of pneumonia and infections. Each trip to the hospital would be more of a setback, and in 2018 a stroke bringing on even more issues. The last year, he spent almost 7/12 months in the hospital for different things. My mom didn’t leave his side for one single second - a true testament to their marriage and love. Watching my father pass was one of the hardest things, but knowing he is free from the suffering he endured for so long is providing us comfort during this time. I am a huge supporter of transplants, as that allowed me borrowed time with my Dad, but ultimately, we need to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis. It’s devastating and heartbreaking. My Dad was a fighter, Superman, a PF warrior, and the greatest man I will ever know.
