Anthony "Tony" Cafoncelli Doctor Antonio Romulo Cafoncelli died on January 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in 1938 to Nelida and Romulo Cafoncelli in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Antonio, known to friends and family as “Tony”, graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires Medical School at the age of 21 and worked in various hospitals until moving to Mar del Plata where he did his residency at the Community Hospital where made life-long friends whom he kept in touch with until recently. He had the fondest memories of his residency years riding around the coastal town of Mar del Plata on his motorcycle. He then moved back to Buenos Aires to work at Hospital Peña prior to immigrating to the US. In December 1970, Tony landed in Philadelphia, PA. He arrived wearing a light linen suit (after all it was summer in Argentina!). Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, he was warmly welcomed to his residency at the University of Pennsylvania by C. Everett Koop, who later served as the 13th Surgeon General of the United States. To further hone his specialty, Tony practiced in Wilmington, DE, Atlanta, GA, Charlotte, NC (as Chief Resident), and Chicago, IL. Upon becoming Board Certified in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Tony settled in Charleston, WV in 1980 where he spent the next twenty five years as a driving force behind Thoracic and Cardiovascular Associates, Inc, one of the leading surgical practices in the Mid-Atlantic region at the time. Upon his retirement, Tony completed his Master’s degree in Public Health at WVU. Shortly after, he and his wife, Teresa, relocated to Washington, DC where he interned at the World Health Organization. In addition, Tony taught an epigenetics course at American University’s OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program. Tony was the definition of a life-long learner. Tony was passionate about his fine rugs, wine, travel, Argentine football, and his family. He had a deep appreciation for and knowledge of Persian & Oriental rugs and would enthusiastically launch into conversations about their intricate craftsmanship. He was a wine connoisseur who loved his Malbecs. He traveled the world with Teresa visiting the wine regions of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal (California snuck in there too!). Their love of travel was infectious and they visited over 30 countries across 5 different continents. In December, Tony saw his beloved Albiceleste win the World Cup for a 3rd time in history. Above all, Tony was devoted to his global network of friends and family. Not a day went by when he did not receive or make a long-distance phone call to tell a funny story or share a friendly rant. We all have countless memories of his animated humor, boisterous laugh and wide-ranging opinions (which he was always happy to share). Although Tony became a doctor at a young age, his most cherished titles were Husband, Father and especially Nono. The children miss Nono’s impish personality, silly jokes and their wide-ranging conversations on numerous topics. Nono will forever be in their hearts and part of who they are. Tony is survived by his wife, Teresa Guzman, his daughter, Anna Cafoncelli and her husband, Joseph Nassif, Teresa’s daughters, Silvia Lucero and Monica Lucero, his most beloved grandchildren, Nícola and Luca Villarino, and Monica’s husband José Villarino. Roger Pace Roger was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2021. Prior to his diagnosis he loved to walk, work in his garage, go to the beach and take family vacations to Lake George, NY. However, once he was diagnosed, that all changed. He was no longer able to do the things he loved to do because he was oxygen dependent. He lost his sense of freedom and independence. He had multiple hospital admissions, not only for respiratory distress but for multiple bouts of pneumonia, as well as flu, because the steroids to help his airway made him immune compromised. In spite of all that Roger had been through, he still maintained his sense of humor and a strong determination to live long enough to see a cure for this horrible disease. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, he lost his battle with this disease on February 15, 2023. As his daughter, I will advocate for this foundation in the hopes that one day my father's wish will come true and no one will have to endure this devastating disease. Beth Hunley Beth Hunley passed away in peace on Friday February 24th, 2023. Beth was an inspiration to all, whether it was to her family, friends, or perfect strangers who followed along her lung transplant journey. After receiving her pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis in 2014 she started down the long road of researching hospitals and then waiting for a bilateral lung transplant. She began her journey with the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and was on their list for 4 years and 1 dry run call until she moved programs to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She received a set of lungs on November 26th, 2019 after waiting only 4 months. Beth then spent 75 days in the hospital recovering from the operation. It was a grueling fight but she fought to honor the donor and to get home to her family whom she loved more than anything. She was extremely active spreading the word about PF and advocating for everyone to become a donor. From interviewing fellow transplant recipients and posting their stories to her Lung Journey Facebook page, to pushing her hometown paper to publish articles every April to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation– she was not the type to sit it out and not speak up about what she found important. Beth had just over 3 blessed years with her new lungs, some high highs and low lows, but she always kept her smile and unending optimism. A beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, and lung transplant warrior; Beth will be missed by many but her legacy will outlast us all.
