Jimmie Lynn Owen My dad. "Jimmie Lynn" to his sister, cousins and friends from childhood. My dad loved airplanes and flying. He loved the sky, the clouds, and the air. He loved sharing his passion for flying with any and all who were willing to go with him. He loved introducing the vastness of the sky to folks who had never never been above the ground and showing them the beautiful colors and patterns of our communities from above. If he was not in the air, he was probably looking up into the sky.Dad was a farmer. He worked hard on the land that he made our home, caring for the pastures to feed the cattle, mending fences, cutting and baling hay for the winter months' feeding. He enjoyed the animals and being outside on the farm with "Old Denny" the bull, the calves Smut and Rusty, and the many others that trusted him for their care.. He loved sharing the outdoors with our family and friends, taking us for tractor rides, pointing out the different species of plants and trees, sharing nature. He enjoyed being outside in the open air. Dad was also a proud and faithful employee of Eastern Airlines. He commuted from south Mississippi to the international airport in New Orleans, usually with his window down for the fresh air. That air would help him stay awake as he drove home in the middle of the night. He would awake the next day, breath deeply, and head outside to the chores of the farm before making the trip to the airport and Eastern Airlines offices again. It came on gradually. One day his hacking cough worsened, he became short of breath, he became weak, he couldn't climb up into the tractor, walk through the field, or fly among the clouds. It continued to slowly take his breath and eventually took his life. It was pulmonary fibrosis. Frederick Q Vogel Please donate in the name of Frederick Q Vogel, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Captain Frederick Quirin Vogel passed away at home in Point Pleasant, NJ, with his family by his side on January 27, 2020; his valiant battle with pulmonary fibrosis over. Fred was born a Leo on August 11, 1947, in Plainfield, NJ, to the late Anne and Robert Vogel. Raised in Cranford, NJ, Freddy attended Cranford HS where he excelled in sports, especially his favorite, baseball. Fred continued to play baseball at Gettysburg College, graduating in 1969. There, he forged a true fraternity with his Sigma Chi brothers. They remained fast friends; the stories getting better every telling. Fred also married his college sweetheart, Barb, in 1969. Last November, they celebrated 50 wonderful years together; a love story that inspired all who know them. He enlisted in the US Navy after college and served in Naval Intelligence at Clark AFB in the Philippines where he and Barb acquired a love for scuba diving. On return to the US, he was selected for Navy Officer Candidate School and went on to serve 34 years including time in the Naval Reserves, reaching the officer rank of Captain. He was recalled to active duty in Washington, D.C. during the 1990’s middle east conflicts and after 9/11, served at the Defense Intelligence Agency, FBI, NSA, Homeland Security and the Pentagon. At retirement, he was Deputy Director for Intelligence at DIA, Terrorism Analysis Division with this final commendation, “Despite major obstacles, his work resulted in a significant contribution to the protection of United States forces worldwide.” Fred earned his MBA at Drexel University and his civilian career included financial positions at Siemens, Computervision, Burroughs and Equitable Life. He most enjoyed his post-retirement gig as host and story-teller at the Sea Crest by the Sea, the inn that he and Barb owned in Spring Lake, NJ. Fred was very proud of the bond he shared with his daughter Leigh, forged when she was a toddler and he a ‘stay-at-home dad’. He shared his love of baseball with Chris while coaching countless little league games and travelling to high school and college baseball games around the country. Fred especially loved his grandchildren learning to swim in the family pool and the annual family trips to the Cayman Islands. He got great joy from tinkering in the garage with his grandkids, taking apart or fixing everything from boats to toasters. His positivity and can-do attitude made him a great role model for his entire family. Pop-pop was always quick to tell his family how much he loved them. Fred was a man of deep faith; he walked the walk and talked the talk. First at Calvary Lutheran in Cranford and then Holy Trinity in Manasquan where he served in many volunteer capacities and impacted many souls. Fred is survived by his wife, Barbara Wold Vogel; children, Leigh (Michael) DeMarco, and Christopher (Jill) Vogel; four cherished grandchildren, Max, Evan, Nels, and Lacy; sister Dale (Michael) Malekoff and brother Charles (Gail) Vogel, brother-in-law Ted Wold; 8 (grand) nieces and nephews and many cousins. He is predeceased by his sister Barbara Ann (Neil) Koopman. Fred was a gentle, loving, and generous husband, father, grandfather, friend, leader and mentor. He is dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, February 9th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6 Osborn Avenue, Manasquan, NJ. Reception following. Interment will be private. Byron Acuff We are raising awareness and funds for the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. As many of you know, Byron suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a fatal disease that causes scarring of the lungs, which robs the IPF patient the ability to breathe and has a 3-5 year life expectancy. Kyungil "KC" Cho "The Mountains are calling, and I must go."KC cared deeply about people and always put others first. He loved his family, his home, his garden, and his neighborhood in OC. His greatest joy was being a grandfather after he retired from 30 years of public service, working for the State of California. He was proud of his Korean heritage, his alma mater (Seoul National University), and his service in the Korean Air Force.K.C. did not let IPF limit him from living life to the fullest. He was passionate about the outdoors and was true to the philosophy of John Muir who wrote, “The Mountains are calling, and I must go.” He hiked and skied until his last year with small oxygen tanks on his back. Up until his last month, he walked an hour a day on the beach, swam in a pool with his oxygen tanks on floats, and exercised with a personal trainer. KC used a portable oxygen machine to travel and spent his last year adventuring... driving across America to see the national parks, hiking in the footsteps of Charles Darwin in the Galapagos Islands, and becoming a Hawaiian "native,” enjoying stunning Maui sunsets with his toes in the sand. We hope his story encourages other patients with IPF to stay active.Please donate in his name so that treatments or a cure can be developed to improve life for sufferers of this terrible disease. Susan Schubert Coyne Susan lost her five year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis on December 29, 2018. She was vibrant and energetic, living life to its fullest and was always on the go. Within two years of being diagnosed, her activity level was severely compromised by this horrible disease and continued to slowly decline until her final breath.
