Go to E. A. Merrill

E. A. Merrill

In Memory of E. A. Merrill The word “pulmonary” means lung and the word “fibrosis” means scar tissue— similar to scars that you may have on your skin from an old injury or surgery. So, in its simplest sense, pulmonary fibrosis (PF) means scarring in the lungs. Over time, the scar tissue can destroy the normal lung and make it hard for oxygen to get into your blood. Low oxygen levels (and the stiff scar tissue itself) can cause you to feel short of breath, particularly when walking and exercising. Pulmonary fibrosis isn’t just one disease. It is a family of more than 200 different lung diseases that all look very much alike. The PF family of lung diseases falls into an even larger group of diseases called the interstitial lung diseases (also known as ILD), which includes all of the diseases that have inflammation and/or scarring in the lung. Some interstitial lung diseases don’t include scar tissue. When an interstitial lung disease does include scar tissue in the lung, we call it pulmonary fibrosis. No one is certain how many people are affected by PF. One recent study estimated that idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (or IPF, which is just one of more than 200 types of PF) affects 1 out of 200 adults over the age of 60 and over in the United States—that translates to more than 200,000 people living with PF today. Approximately 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and as many as 40,000 Americans die from IPF each year. Dad's PF was from inhaling fiber glass and asbestos during his career as an insulator at nuclear power plants across the country. The life expectancy of someone with PF is 3-5 years after diagnosis. Dad's diagnosis was a little over 5 years ago. Please donate in the name of E. A. Merrill, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. All proceeds go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community • Promoting disease awareness • Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their families Please donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost. Go to Emma Hyde

Emma Hyde

Emma Bagwell Hyde June 7, 1948 - April 22, 2023 Emma Bagwell Hyde’s heart of gold came to a final rest on Saturday, April 22, 2023, bringing her battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) to a conclusion. While the little-known, uncurable lung disease was mighty, Emma’s determination (with a touch of stubbornness) allowed her to spend several years more than doctors predicted with her husband and love of her life for the past 50 years – Fred Hyde. She also was able to witness both her children marry their loves during that time – with Christie Hyde DeNave sharing vows with husband Joe on the beach near her home in Florida in 2015 and F. Michael Hyde pledging his love to wife Gina a year later in Spartanburg. But her true strength and determination to fight IPF was drawn from her granddaughters – 5-year-old Lydia Hyde and 14-year-old Emily DeNave – whom she loved, supported, and doted upon to the very end. Emma strongly encouraged those who wanted recognize her passing to not send flowers or other items, but instead to make a donation to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation with hopes of someday finding a cure for this dreadful disease that took her from us. All proceeds of donations go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community • Promoting disease awareness • Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their families All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar raised goes to help support the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Paul Bauccio

My husband, Paul F. Bauccio Jr, was diagnosed with IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis). IPF is a lung disease with no cure - the lungs slowly dry out leaving the patient winded and needing additional oxygen to sustain them. However, his strong will and love for life and family allowed him to fight this disease without a cure all the way to 11/30/23, the day he passed away peacefully after a long battle with IPF. In lieu of flowers, please donate in honor of Paul F. Bauccio Jr, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. Carol Gass

In memory of Carol Marie Gass. Carol was a one of a kind truly beautiful person inside and out. She gained her wings July 22, 2021 after secretly suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for the last few years. The memories with Carol will never be forgotten and the love she showed will be with us forever. Carol had two boys, Davy and Cameron. They were her pride and joy and loved to talk about them to anyone she met. Carol loved her husband Mitchell and their dogs although they are a handful she wouldn’t have wanted it differently. Carol adored talking to her mother Ann and sisters Vanessa, Teresa, Brenda, Pat, and brother David. She enjoyed being outside and taking care of her flowers. Carol made everyone she met feel welcomed, accepted, and treated strangers like a friend. She will truly be missed by us all. Tom has graciously donated his body to science in hopes to find a cure for IPF so others can avoid the pain he and his family experienced over the last year. We love you and miss you everyday. In an effort to make sense of this senseless situation, our family continues to support efforts to find a cure for IPF and help others and we appreciate the wonderful support we’ve received from family and friends. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated. High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew – And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untresspassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
