Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. Richard (Dick) Anthony Risio, 79, of Ashaway, RI passed away peacefully at his summer home in West Yarmouth, MA on Saturday, Aug 31, 2019. Dick was born in East Providence, RI to Guido and Catherine (Friel) Risio on Jul 29, 1940. He graduated from LaSalle Academy and URI where he was a proud member of Sigma Chi maintaining lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers. On Dec 14, 1963, he married Nancy (Williamson) Risio, they enjoyed 55 years together, and Nancy was with him when he passed. Together, they raised two daughters, Sue and Naomi, and a son Andrew. Dick lived a life of serving others: he was a proud Army Veteran who served in Vietnam, a public educator for thirty years at Stonington High School, a lifelong commentator at his church and a helping hand any time a neighbor, friend or family member was in need. Always ready for a game of pitch or cribbage, he played with the same circle of friends for over 50 years. He was loved for his wit and fondness for April Fool's practical jokes. His greatest joy was spending time with friends and family. Dick is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Cathy Storti. He is survived by brother Robert Risio and sister Ann Ring, his beloved wife Nancy, daughter Susan Marchal and husband Philip; son Andrew Risio and wife Carmen; and daughter Naomi Warchol and husband Robert. Dick was a loving grandfather to Isabella and Jacqueline Marchal, Christopher and Alexander Risio, and Julia, Helena and Burke Warchol. Special thanks to the staff at Beacon Hospice, Drs. Walter Donat and Warren Licht, as well as many friends and family who helped care for him in his time of need. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday Sep 12 from 5-8pm at Buckler-Johnson Funeral Home, 121 Main Street, Westerly, RI 02891. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church 69 Main St., Ashaway on Friday 10am. Burial will be for immediate family only. For online condolences, please visit www.buckler-johnston.com. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be made in Dick’s name to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Donald (Don) Frank Barnes Please donate in the name of my dad, Don Barnes, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. I lost my dad to this terrible disease on September 19 after a 4 year battle. He was diagnosed in September 2015 after suffering from what was thought to be multiple cases of pneumonia. Finally going to a specialist & being told he has pulmonary fibrosis, we didn’t know what that meant or what the next steps were? As a family, we began to do our own research & started learning that it is a diagnosis that would change our lives forever. After seeing a Pulmonologist that told us what you read on the internet, is in fact the definition of this disease. We began to learn that the pulmonary fibrosis would lead to a much bigger problem, Pulmonary Hypertension. With both of these diseases, my dad didn’t have a fighting chance. Although he fought like hell, it would eventually be much more than his body could handle. My dad leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Freda Barnes, 3 adult children & spouses, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson & 1 great-granddaughter on the way. He is a USMC Vietnam Veteran that served his Country honorably from 1964-1968. My mission in starting this memorial tribute page in my dad’s honor is so that we can hopefully continue to raise money & awareness for Pulmonary Fibrosis/Pulmonary Hypertension. If doctors can save 1 life from this nasty disease because more research is being done, then I know I’ve made my dad proud! Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in your lungs and the right side of your heart. In one form of pulmonary hypertension, tiny arteries in your lungs, called pulmonary arterioles, and capillaries become narrowed, blocked or destroyed. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your lungs, and raises pressure within your lungs' arteries. As the pressure builds, your heart's lower right chamber (right ventricle) must work harder to pump blood through your lungs, eventually causing your heart muscle to weaken and fail. With pulmonary hypertension, the rise in blood pressure is caused by changes in the cells that line your pulmonary arteries. These changes can cause the walls of the arteries to become stiff and thick, and extra tissue may form. The blood vessels may also become inflamed and tight. These changes in the pulmonary arteries can reduce or block blood flow through the blood vessels. This makes it harder for blood to flow, raising the blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. Pulmonary fibrosisis a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, you become progressively more short of breath. Pulmonary fibrosis scars and thickens the tissue around and between the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs. This makes it more difficult for oxygen to pass into your bloodstream. The damage can be caused by many different factors — including long-term exposure to certain toxins, certain medical conditions, radiation therapy and some medications. Long-term exposure to a number of toxins and pollutants can damage your lungs. The lung scarring that occurs in pulmonary fibrosis can't be reversed, and no current treatment has proved effective in stopping progression of the disease. Some treatments may improve symptoms temporarily or slow the disease's progression. Others may help improve quality of life. High blood pressure in your lungs (pulmonary hypertension).Unlike systemic high blood pressure, this condition affects only the arteries in your lungs. It begins when the smallest arteries and capillaries are compressed by scar tissue, causing increased resistance to blood flow in your lungs. This in turn raises pressure within the pulmonary arteries and the lower right heart chamber (right ventricle). Some forms of pulmonary hypertension are serious illnesses that become progressively worse and are sometimes fatal. Some treatments may improve symptoms temporarily or slow the disease's progression. Others may help improve quality of life. Researchers continue to study medications to treat pulmonary fibrosis. All proceeds go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community • Promoting disease awareness • Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their families Please donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost. All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar raised goes to help support the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Miguel Aristizabal

My father, Miguel, was a very active man! As a kid and into adulthood he played all different sports…he loved to run, soccer, roller skate, walk, lift weights, and challenge himself to be the best version of himself physically. Despite his diagnosis with Pulmonary Fibrosis he gave his all and never gave up! He taught us to keep pushing and moving even when he could barely catch his breath. On June 5,2022 I plan to run my first half marathon in memory of my father. I hope to raise my goal of $1,500 to help find a cure. Thank you to all for your support! Jeanne Harling We are raising awareness and funds for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in memory of my mom, Jeanne Harling. She was the most amazing woman, mother, sister, and friend. She had the biggest heart. She was well known and loved in the community. In fact, we would get asked “How’s your mom?” by almost everyone we saw. She was taken from us by Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis too soon at the age of 60, and our children have to grow up without their Nana. My name is Tatiana Riera, and I am the daughter of a wonderful man who fought against IPF since 2014. I recently lost my father due to this illness and I feel like the only proper way to deal with the pain of the loss is to do the one thing my dad always taught me to do and reminded me constantly, help others. Through this page, I want to raise awareness and funds for the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. All proceeds go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community• Promoting disease awareness• Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their familiesPlease donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost. Post this on your Facebook and Twitter pages. Every donation counts, no matter what the amount. From what I lived with my dad in these years, I could see that living with IPF is terrible. There is nothing more painful than seeing your loved one deteriorating because of this disease and knowing that they are suffering. It is a thing that I don't wish anyone to go through. I pray for everyone who is going through it, and their families, to have a lot of strength and hope. The loss of a loved one is devastating. Yet, we are always reminded by our hearts – how lucky we have been to know those that we love even in our loss.Thank you for your thoughtfulness. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.
