Beverly L. Newell

Beverly L. Newell Beverly Louise (Maurath) Newell, a former resident of Bloomfield, CT, passed away on March 24 at McLean Health in Simsbury, CT after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was surrounded by her children and devoted husband of nearly 66 years, Richard C. Newell. Born and raised in East Providence, RI, she was the daughter of William C. Maurath and Hope B. Wood. Beverly would have celebrated her 90th birthday on May 27. Beverly was a graduate of Wheelock College and worked as an elementary school teacher for ten years, helping put her husband through medical school. She was dedicated to her family, an exceptional mother, and a loving grandmother. Beverly was a gifted artist, working through the years as a painter, pewtersmith, and porcelain painter. As a teenager, she rode horses and played the cello. As an adult, she was a pianist and tennis player. Beverly enjoyed the water and spending time at the beach. She loved flowers and was an avid gardener, serving as the president of the local garden club. She was active in the Bloomfield Congregational Church, volunteered with the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary, worked at a local art gallery, and turned her love of travel into a job as a travel agent. She and her husband retired to Gilford, NH, where they lived on Lake Winnipesaukee for 15 years. They enjoyed winters in Naples, FL, where Beverly tutored and exhibited her porcelain painting. The couple also lived in Avon, Chester, and Farmington, CT prior to moving to Simsbury. Beverly is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Richard C. Newell; her eldest daughter, Jan Newell Spears, and daughter Jasmine; her son, Randall S. Newell, his wife Karen, and their three sons, Matthew, Ryan, and Christopher; and her youngest daughter, Wendy Newell Hunt, her husband Pat, and their two children, Lila and Patrick. She is also survived by her sister, Gail Lyon, and husband Edwin, as well as many loving members of the Lyon, Malloy, and Newell families. She was predeceased by her sister, Clara. A memorial service is planned for May 19, 2019, at 12:00 noon at the Hill-Stead Museum, 35 Mountain Road, Farmington, CT 06032 (in the Makeshift Theatre). Please donate in the name of Beverly L. Phil (aka dad) was the Greatest Man we ever knew.. he was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2012. The Dr's told him that he had 2 weeks to live and given the option to go to a care facility or go home and enjoy the rest of his days. In true fashion, he told the disease where it could go and 6 months later, hospice was firing him as a client. He knew every day was borrowed time and lived it to the fullest. He was a walking miracle and told everyone that listened.. "I am not a quitter". The past 7 years, his Dr's were amazed and he quickly became the most favorite patient of the office. Jim Danko

Jim Danko My dad, Jim Danko, was a wonderful father and friend to everyone. He loved watching sports, playing golf, and spending time with his family the most. Almost 4 years ago, we found out he was sick with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. We did not know much about the disease at the time, but we quickly learned of its devastating impact to his health and well being. We all miss my dad everyday, but with his loss comes the opportunity to educate my friends and family about this horrible disease that cut my dads life short and is being diagnosed at a growing rate. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a respiratory disease that hardens the elasticity of the lungs, effectively killing off the tissue slowly by creating scar tissue. "Idiopathic" means unknown cause. This means doctors and others in the medical community do not know how patients contract the disease because it is still relatively new and because of this, most cases go miss diagnosed as pneumonia because of the initial symptoms. This was true for my dads case. At the present time, there is not a known cure for the disease besides medication to slow the progression and then eventually transplantation of the lungs. We tried getting him on the transplant list 2 separate times, but other health complications prevented him from getting a spot on the list he so badly needed. This is the case for many patients that we have learned. And even if the patient gets on the list, the journey to recovery has just begun. During the last year and a half of his life, I had the an active role in caring for my father along side my mom. Throughout the process, his spirits were good for the most part and he was always ready for a good laugh. He touched so many lives around him during his life and he also touched more after we learned someone was able to benefit from the gift of sight because of his generous donation of his corneas. Please donate in the name of Jim Danko, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. All proceeds go towards: • Finding effective treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis• Advocating for the pulmonary fibrosis community • Promoting disease awareness • Providing a compassionate environment for patients and their families Please donate and together we can help those living with pulmonary fibrosis and the families of those we have lost. All donations are tax-deductible and every dollar raised goes to help support the mission of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. If you cannot make a donation at this time, please forward this e-mail and link to everyone you know. Post this on your Facebook and Twitter pages. Every donation counts, no matter what the amount. Lillie C. Triol & Susan Pilato Please donate in the names of Lillie C. Triol & Susan Pilato, so that a cure and/or treatments to prolong life for sufferers of this terrible disease can be found. This page is dedicated to two Mothers related through marriage, who passed away within 6 month of one another. Lillie was an avid swimmer and pie baker who loved to do yard work. Before PF, she stayed active even walking several miles a day, even into her mid eighties. Susan was an avid golfer, loved to swim and was a fierce mahjong player. Susan was taken from life way too early, in her late seventies. Both our mothers experienced the ravages of PF. Please contribute to the PF foundation so no one else has to live through or witness this terrible disease. The families of Lillie and Susan both thank you for each and every dollar of support. May you be able to say Happy Mother’s Day! to all your mothers.
