Arrupe Service and Social Justice Endowment Challenge

The Arrupe Service and Social Justice Endowment: Building a Lasting Service Legacy Mike '99 and Susanna Puntel Short '01 are spearheading an effort to build a legacy by endowing the Campus Ministries' Center for Service and Social Justice (CSSJ). Through donor support of the Arrupe Service and Social Justice Endowment, we will create a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding for our service programs. The value of the fund will be invested and will generate income each year to support our mission. This will ensure that the very essence of a University of Scranton education - service opportunities rooted in the Jesuit tradition - will forever be available to Scranton students. Even more, it will ensure they are as affordable as possible. Over the past 33 years, experiences through the CSSJ have changed thousands of Scranton students’ lives through local service, domestic service trips, FIRST, and the SPARK and S.M.A.R.T. programs, just to name a few. While we are very proud of these opportunities, the domestic service trips are sometimes cost-prohibitive to our students. The Arrupe Endowment will provide indefinite support for the CSSJ - first offsetting costs, and then fully funding some of these programs as the endowment grows. Our goal for 5.06 Weekend is to reach $35,000 for the Arrupe Endowment by midnight on Monday, May 6. If we reach our goal, Mike and Susanna will give $50,000! Gifts of every amount make a significant impact for Scranton students. Multi-year pledges, specifically, have a huge impact on our cause. These donor categories afford the following opportunities for Scranton students and the community: Many companies offer matching gift programs which can help you reach your philanthropic goal, so be sure to check with your employer and your spouse’s employer. If you have any questions about a multi-year pledge, please contact the Office of Annual Giving at annualgiving@scranton.edu to help you maximize your impact for Scranton students.

A Message from Brian's Family: Friends and Family, We are humbled by the outpouring of support you've shown for Brian. Today 80 people came together to run/walk with the Musto Team in the Royals 5.06k for the University's Day of Giving and we've raised nearly $5,000 this weekend alone. Last year we raised enough to endow Brian's Fund, ensuring that his memory would live on forever at Scranton. We're excited to announce that this fall, The Brian Musto '12 Memorial Fund will be awarded for the first time to students battling illnesses. That's why we want to continue growing the fund to impact as many students as possible. If we reach $12,000 in honor of Brian's class year, we'll contribute an additional $10,000. Again, we thank you so much for your support. We're excited to give back to Scranton students in Brian's memory. Business High School Scholars

If University of Scranton professors Douglas M. Boyle, Jim Boyle and and Daniel P. Mahoney graduated from high school in 2018, they’re not sure they’d have the means to attend college. With that in mind, along with conversations with community leaders and the desire to keep local students in Scranton, they created the University’s Business High School Scholars Program. The University currently has a successful High School Scholars Program where local students take University courses at a discounted rate. They are held to the same standard and offered the same resources as the enrolled university students. This new program, while still offering college-level classes at a discounted rate, groups the high school students to form a cohort and a community in pursuit of their degree. The courses are offered in the summer, early mornings and late afternoons to accommodate the student schedules and build meaningful time with faculty mentors. The first cohort of 17 students, from 16 local high schools, formed in July 2018. Students who apply for the program must be rising juniors or seniors with a GPA of 3.3 (B+) or higher and meet other program requirements. The Boyle/Mahoney Business High School Scholarship Fund To demonstrate their commitment to this program, to the NEPA community and to The University of Scranton, faculty members Doug Boyle, Jim Boyle and Dan Mahoney have donated all compensation from teaching in this program to fund scholarships for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to enroll as Business High School Scholars. The University of Scranton seeks to build on this generous commitment by building an endowed fund, with a goal of $250,000, to support scholarships for local high school students to pursue their dreams at The University of Scranton. You can support the Business High School Scholars Program at Various Levels: A gift of $500 will support one student for one college credit class A gift of $1000 will support one student for two college credit classes A gift of $1,500 will support one student for full-year program (two semesters + summer class) Customized gifts and multi-year commitments are welcome In appreciation of your support for this program, The University of Scranton is pleased to offer donors the following recognition: Listing of all donors in The University’s Annual Donor Impact Report Listing of all donors in on the Business High School Scholars Campaign Page Interactive Student Thank-You Opportunities Permanent Donor Recognition in Brennan Hall of all gifts of $1,000 or more

Royal Experience Internship Program

Royal Experience Internship Program At the end of their academic journey, job placement is of utmost importance for Scranton students. To prepare for their success, students are provided with opportunities to explore their career interests, gain new skills, and experience the world of work. Internships, specifically, are a critical part of integrating knowledge and theory from the classroom with practical application and skill development in a professional setting. Many times, students are offered internships with organizations that are not able to provide a salary or stipend. These costs may include travel to and from his/her destination, housing, living expenses, and/or tuition for internship credit. To relieve this financial burden, The Royal Experience Fund was created. This award provides stipends to undergraduate students who accept unpaid experiential learning opportunities. It is solely made possible by the generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, like you, who understand the importance of making possible these experiences that prepare students to become agents of change in our word.

Health Professions Organization Club The Health Professions Organization (HPO) is a student group at the University of Scranton which provides support, information, and networking opportunities for pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, pre-podiatry, and pre-optometry students, among others. Members can be University of Scranton students of any major who have an interest in careers in the health field. For our annual retreat and weekly meetings, we invite numerous Scranton alumni who are either in professional school or currently practicing in the health-care field to speak to HPO members about finding the Magis in professional lives by using their talents and experiences to serve others on a local, national, and global scale. Serving as ideal models of "men and women for others," using their scientific and clinical prowess to serve those in need, our medical alumni enthusiastically agree to give of their time and talent for Scranton students. These interactions allow HPO members to better discern professional schools of interest, initiate networking opportunities, and can be critical in the admissions process. The money raised for HPO will then be donated and split equally between the Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center and Clinic and the annual Medical Alumni Conference Mission trip to Haiti. Edward R. Leahy Jr. Center and Clinic: This clinic serves the uninsured residents of Lackawanna County and as a Spanish interpreter there since my freshman year, I have become a witness to the necessity of treating the whole person. Many of the patients have chronic diseases, such as type II diabetes or heart disease, and require frequent appointments, which has blessed me with the opportunity to learn incredible, inspiring stories from them and form close relationships with them. My role as a Spanish interpreter involves aiding the physicians and patients with primary care medical and physical therapy appointments. While most patients are compliant with the medications, they are often unaware of other harmful factors, such as a poor diet or lack of exercise and social support. Thus, the clinic offers dietary programs, food pantry items, and reduced-cost medications to bypass these additional obstacles. The recognition of these extra-medical factors through my service has allowed me to develop an appreciation and admiration for the physicians that volunteer their time at the clinic. It has also taught me the importance of awareness of a patient’s entire being, so that he or she can reach complete physical, mental, and emotional healing.--Theresa Webster ’18 MAC Mission trip to Haiti: We spent one week in Haiti setting up and running mobile clinics. During clinics, we were invited to work side-by-side with the physicians and practice examining and attempting to diagnose patients. While much of the care that we provided may have only fleeting effects, what I learned about clinical practice, how to ethically carry out short-term mission trips, and the needs of Haiti will influence how I live my life and practice medicine. No person chooses to be born in a poverty-stricken nation like Haiti, and I would like to do as much as I can to level the playing field for those that are disadvantaged. I hope to frequently return to Haiti and/or other impoverished nations and be an advocate for improving healthcare internationally.--Randy Lesh '18

As we continue to expand as a club, as we have been, we aim to provide more activities and games to our members. The donations will help us host a greater variety of events for our current members, ensure that we have money we can use to repair and replace games if they are broken, and get the games and game systems our members would like to play on. Thank you for your support!
