Arun Arjunan

Arun cared deeply about helping others in need. In lieu of flowers or other items, the Arjunan family asks that you honor Arun by donating to the Houston Food Bank. ******************** A bright light for all, Arunkumar Arjunan passed in peace on March 27, 2021 and will be dearly missed as a loving son, brother, and friend. Arun graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1997 and obtained a degree in Genetics from Texas A&M University in 2001. He pursued his passion by becoming a scientist at Novartis and Scripps Research, and later as a teacher to disadvantaged middle school youth in Houston Independent School District. Arun was a voracious reader and fulfilled his deep curiosity through lifelong learning and a variety of interests. All who knew him, knew he enjoyed cooking and lively conversations ranging from science, current events, hip hop, and all things basketball. He was always passionate about music and film and amassed an impressive music library over the years which he used to introduce new sounds and beats to friends. Above all, Arun will always be known for his open heart and loyal friendship. Arun led with compassion, welcoming everyone as a friend and lending all friends his help and loyalty without question. Arun made everyone feel seen and special with his easy smile, sharp wit, and sardonic sense of humor. Though Arun’s time with us was short, his impact was indelible. Arun bravely met life’s moments with authenticity, both in hardship and in joy. He ensured that his actions mirrored his values and belief in doing what was right and fair. May we all have the courage to do the same and honor Arun’s memory by carrying this spirit into our own lives. Arun leaves behind his loving mother Leela, father Palanisamy, brothers Selvam and Ananth, and sister-in-law Shannon

Leslie Gunaratne

We created this page to honor the legacy of Leslie Gunaratne. He was someone who loved to feed and help others, and we know he appreciated what the Houston Food Bank does to help those who are less fortunate. Thank you for continuing his legacy with your gift to the Houston Food Bank in lieu of floral arrangements. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie Gunaratne on January 9th, 2021. He was a devoted father, husband, and friend to all whose lives he touched. Leslie was born in Nawala, Sri Lanka on March 9th, 1936 to Martin and Druci Gunaratne. He attended St. Anthony’s College in Wattala where he met his dear late wife Ranee. The two were inseparable and never spent more than 10 days apart in over 57 years of marriage. With the intention of providing more opportunities for their family, Leslie and Ranee migrated to the United States with their three children, Saman, Sandiya and Ravi in 1968. They were the first Sri Lankans to settle in Staten Island, NY. Leslie’s passion for helping others motivated him to sponsor numerous family and friends to come to the United States, thereby creating the thriving Sri Lankan community that still exists in Staten Island. In 1979, when Leslie moved his family to Houston, Texas, it was estimated that most of the 500+ Sri Lankans in Staten Island were connected to him through blood or marriage. Leslie started his career in the U.S. working on Wall Street as an accountant before joining the banking industry and eventually retiring as a mutual fund accountant with JPMorgan Chase. He found joy in financial investing and closely followed the stock market in his free time. Leslie traveled all over the world. He liked learning about foreign cultures and meeting new people. He was fortunate enough to visit over 75 countries during his lifetime. Leslie knew that a good meal brought people together, and he was known for cooking his famous eggrolls and hoppers for his family and friends. He also enjoyed his afternoon scotch and was happy to share a glass with anyone who would join him. His greatest love was his family, and he instilled in them strong values that have served them well. He would often boast how grateful he was to have known his 5 grandchildren: Shawn, Sheron, Christina, Ravi, and Sandiya, and 8 great-grandchildren: Gavin, Sumer, Ella, Preston, Sterling, Aviana, Samson, and Gemma. They all knew and loved him as “Papa”. Leslie spent his final days in the home of his son Saman and daughter-in-law Sakun where he found comfort and joy in their presence. Leslie will be dearly missed by all and forever in our hearts. Public Viewing and Private Cremation (January 14th):The public viewing for Leslie Gunaratne will be held on Thursday, January 14th from 8am to 3pm with traditional Buddhist funeral rites from 10am to 11am (cst). As per his wishes, Leslie will be privately cremated Thursday evening. Please consider making a donation to the Houston Food Bank in lieu of floral arrangements. We have created this page to honor Mom’s legacy. As you all know, Mom was a nurturer and a nourisher. She never let anyone leave the house with an empty stomach. She also had a long standing relationship with the Houston Food Bank as a volunteer and supporter. In these difficult times, so many people are standing in line for hours at food banks across the nation struggling to find their next meal. What better way to remember mom this year than to help feed those in need. This week please take the time to feed someone who needs it. There is no pressure to donate here, but you could send a friend who’s struggling a care package, feed an elderly neighbor, or buy lunch for a first responder. If you choose to donate to Houston Food Bank, you can do so through this link. Since we could not do a havan this month, thank you for helping us remember mom in this way. ❤️

I've created this page to honor the legacy of my mother Joyce Holton. We are asking friends and family to donate to the Houston Food Bank in lieu of flowers. My mother has always been a big supporter of the Houston Food Bank, and we have donated in her honor for birthdays and holidays many, many times over the years. I know she would be honored to have money raised in her memory to support this important cause.Thank you for continuing my mom's legacy with your gift to the Houston Food Bank. Here is her obituary: Joyce Click Holton, a kind and beautiful person, passed away on Wednesday October 20, 2021. Born on August 3, 1942 in Houston Texas to Loyce and George Click, she was 79 years old. Following her childhood and school years in LaMarque, Texas, she raised her two daughters, Lisa and Angie, with her sweet husband Joe in Houston. In her 61 year marriage to Joe, they said they were “still crazy after all these years” because of their unique and loving partnership. With an incredibly funny and quick wit, Joyce often referred to herself as a “most peculiar Mama.” Operating from the space of love itself, her compassionate nature was obvious to everyone who knew her. An avid reader, she especially loved researching American social history, the British royalty, and music biographies. She loved to hunt for antique and collectible dishware, which she discussed with friends in her many years with the Houston Glass Club. She was also an amazing artist. She created intricate collages on decorative boxes which she gave to friends and family, and she also made hearts which she donated to La Pena art gallery for their auctions. Joyce is survived by her devoted husband Joe Rider Holton, her daughters Melissa (Lisa) Holton and Angela (Angie) Schafer, and her sons-in-law, Lee Kyle and Phil Schafer. She is also survived by her brother George Wayne Click, his wife Diana, brother-in-law Bill Holton and his wife Georgia, her nephews Kevin and Jeff Click, and her niece, Kelly Click. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Click Trout. Funeral services were held in a private ceremony in Austin Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to the Houston Food Bank, one of Joyce’s favorite charities. You can contact the Houston Food Bank here: https://igfn.us/vf/InMemory/JoyceHolton

Ann Criswell, longtime Houston Chronicle Food Editor, died Tuesday December 15, 2020, of complications from COVID-19. The Houston Food Bank addressed an important concern of Ann’s. It was hard for her to experience the abundance and joy of food and at the same time that so many Houstonians experienced food insecurity. She strongly supported their mission. We can think of no better way to remember our mother than by supporting The Houston Food Bank, especially now that so many people depend on this food to sustain them as COVID continues to threaten our world.
