Etowah County

It is an exciting time in Etowah County 4-H! In an effort to recognize those outstanding graduating seniors in 4-H and give those younger youth something to look forward to, the Etowah County 4-H Advisory Board has decided to start a local 4-H scholarship program. The recipients will be selected based on their application and interview with the selection committee. Etowah County has one of the premiere 4-H programs in state in large part to the leadership of the older youth; the scholarship program will help to build on the momentum generated by their passion for 4-H and desire to invest in the younger members. Thank You for your generosity and playing a significant role in helping these exemplary youth leaders further their education and continue to change the world. The 4-H motto is "To Make The Best Better"; your contribution to the Etowah County 4-H Scholarship Program has done just that. THANK YOU for partnering with us to empower today's youth to be the community leaders of tomorrow! “I strongly believe that two of the greatest things 4-H has taught me is to value and appreciate the differences in people; and that it is my responsibility and privilege to help others through service.” Marion Bell2020-21 Alabama 4-H State Ambassador

Our slogan at 4-H is “Learn by Doing.” The 4-H Chick Chain project gives young people the opportunity to do just that. In May , each student receives pullets that they raise through the Summer. Through this project, students learn much more than poultry management skills. They also learn about responsibility, record keeping, entrepreneurship, and communication. At the project’s end, the students bring their best hens to the Northeast Alabama Chick Chain Show and Auction. A donation of $60 will supply the prize money for participants in one showmanship or breed class. Sponsors of each class will be recognized in the program, promotional materials, and live during the show and Auction at the VFW Fair Showgrounds in Fort Payne, AL.

The 4-H Pig Squeal Project teaches young people recommended management practices for growing and raising swine. Participants develop swine management skills, learn to produce healthy pigs, develop awareness of business management, and develop record-keeping skills. Youth received two feeder pigs that were about 60 days old and about 50 pounds in January. All pigs came from a reputable nursery and were properly vaccinated. Youth cared for these pigs for about 120 days. On April 20, 2024 the youth bring one of the hogs to the Pig Squeal Project Show and Auction where it will be presented and sold. Youth will receive any prize money awarded along with a portion of the auction proceeds. Bidders will have the option of taking possession of the live hogs or sending them to a local processor. The processor will be on site during the action and will take possession of the pigs after the auction. Participants are asked to find donors who are willing to contribute financially to the Pig Squeal fund which helps fund project awards, ribbons and professional support at the annual Pig Squeal Sale and Auction that will be held on April 20, 2024. Spring is just around the corner and our Grow Getters Garden Club is getting ready to plant! The mission of the Grow Getters Garden Club is to give back to the community. Youth active in the club are learning Junior Master Gardener curriculum and gaining first hand experience growing a variety of produce. This club is perfect for anyone who wants to get dirty, learn to grow produce, and participate in giving back to the community. Aside from a small portion that will be used for cooking demos for club members, ALL produce will be donated to people in need in the community. As many are aware, gardening is a project that takes time and money to upkeep. We are looking to raise money for more efficient gardening equipment, plants and seeds, and 10x10 tents to provide a shaded area while working in the summer. 100% of your donation goes to Crenshaw County and will be used to give back to the community. Help today's youth become tomorrow's leaders in Mobile County's 4-H Show Calves Club. At nearly 160,000 members and participants strong, Alabama 4-H is the largest youth development organization in the state of Alabama. Supported by families, partners, staff, volunteers, and youth, we have the strength and capacity to grow young people with the confidence, curiosity, and life skills to become college, career, and family ready. Alabama 4-H, part of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, has expanded its resources to include not only traditional programs, such as 4-H raising livestock and 4-H competitive events, but also new opportunities as well. The 4-H Show Calves club has a yearly show and sale this year its on February 15, 2020. We are asking for donations to help support our annual 4-H Spring Calves Steer and Heifer Show. Currently we are seeking money to pay for the Judge and the cost of ribbons. Your donation, will help to support our 4-Her's who learn a multitude of valuable skills from raising cattle. They have learned about animal husbandry, record book keeping, leadership skills and responsibly from participating in this club. These are just a few of the many ways your gift can provide endless smiles in today’s Alabama 4-H. Help young people and their families gain the skills needed to be a proactive force in Mobile County and to develop ideas for a more innovative world. “I strongly believe that two of the greatest things 4-H has taught me is to value and appreciate the differences in people; and that it is my responsibility and privilege to help others through service.” Marion Bell2020-21 Alabama 4-H State Ambassador

Clay County

Last year alone, Clay County 4-H had nearly 600 members and participants. This was nearly 41% of the youth population in the county, and surpasses most other counties in the state. In 2019, Clay County 4-H brought animal programs such as Chick Chain, Hop To It, and Livestock judging and quiz bowl teams. To date, Clay County serves all youth in public schools with 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th grade clubs and private schools from 4th-12th grades. It also offers a Livestock Club, a Great Outdoors Club, and a Homeschool Entomology program. We also have the opportunity to establish a Robotics program, a Life Skills program, and a Self-Sustaining year-Round Gardening program. Clay County 4-H is a non-profit and relies solely on donations to sustain its program within the county. Without support, our programs will soon cease to exist in Clay County. Help young people and their families gain the skills needed to be a proactive force in their communities and to develop ideas for a more innovative world.
