Hi I’m Aaliyah Wallace, and I was diagnosed with Scoliosis at the age of 9 years old. I wore a brace 22 hours a day for 7 years. My passion has been to help others who may need help financially to receive treatment. FCCLA has given me a platform to raise awareness as wells as use my voice and experience to get the information out there. After presenting last year I realized the impact my journey had and how lucky I was to have the financial support to treat my scoliosis. This made me wonder about patients that don’t have insurance or the financial needs to seek treatment. This lead me to my new project the Outreach. I am sharing my story and encouraging others to reach out and help those who can’t afford treatment. Having scoliosis does not define me and it doesn’t define others that have it. It has in fact motivated me to become a orthopedic surgeon when I get older so I can help find new technologies for scoliosis. >> To personalize your fundraising page, tell your supporters who you are and why you want to help support the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation <<

Hello, my name is Alyssa and I am a scoliosis fighter and dancer! I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 15 years old. My scoliosis was rapidly worsening, and I had a spinal fusion when I was 19 years old. This surgery was medically necessary because if I declined to have the operation, it was projected that I may be dependent on a wheelchair in the near future. Although recovering from my spinal fusion was challenging, it provided me with more strength and an opportunity to continue walking and dancing. The Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation's mission is to advance techniques to treat spinal deformities in order to create a future where children and adolescents can live healthy and happy lives. My spinal fusion changed my life for the better and it would not have been possible without research, education, and early detection! Each dollar donated is equivalent to one hour of scoliosis research. I hope you consider donating to the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation, thank you!

At 11 i was diagnosed with Scoliosis & learned that my curve was considered a large one and I'd need surgery within the year before the spine starts to push against my heart and lungs. I'm currently 12 years old with a spine thats curved at 52 degrees, and each day I fear not being able to walk or do my daily activities anymore. Even though I am getting the help I need I know there's alot of kids out there with no insurance, and starting a fundraiser to contribute to Scoliosis treatment is the best way I know how to help. >> To personalize your fundraising page, tell your supporters who you are and why you want to help support the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation <<

When I was 14 I found myself at a curve on a very difficult road. I was diagnosed with scoliosis and a stress fracture in my vertebrae and was told I may never dance again. The road to recovery was not easy but with a lot of determination and the help of some amazing doctors I was able to strengthen my back and my spine and return to doing what I love most, DANCE. Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to empowering families impacted by scoliosis through education, connection, and research. Their mission is to support discoveries and advance techniques in the treatment of spinal deformities in children and adolescents worldwide. Please help me by donating to this worthy cause! Just one dollar can help fund a whole hour of research!

There are times where I can become super sore and limited to certain workouts.Choosing Setting Scoliosis Straight as my campaign, as I am running for Miss Racine for Wisconsin. I wanted to choose this organization as I am someone who can relate and also wanting to spread awareness. I want to be able to raise money for the advanced research for scoliosis to help people worldwide who have a spinal deformity. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 13. After multiple doctors' opinions, I found out that my scoliosis was so severe no therapy or back brace would cure it. My only resort was surgery. If I did not get the surgery the curvature would have gotten worse and affected my breathing. January 11th, 2017 I had spinal fusion surgery. Thanks to my spinal surgeon (seen in the picture above) along with the rest of his team I am living a normal life of a 16-year-old girl almost 3 years later. I have always wanted to do something in relation to what I went through. I decided to raise money for more extensive research on a disorder I lived through. Please share this with your friends and family as it would mean a lot to me if I could reach my goal. Thank you, everyone, for all your support!!

Hi there! My name is Elli and I was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis at the age of 7. I lived in a Boston Brace for 4 years, until I had 2 spinal fusion surgeries to correct the curvature of my spine. Since 2011, my spine has been fused from T2 - L1 with 2 titanium rods and 18 screws. Today, I am 23 years old with hopes of working to help others, like myself, in the healthcare setting. My personal mission has been defined by what this experience has taught me throughout the years. I have made it my mission to raise awareness and to participate in research for scoliosis in any way possible. To this day, I am extremely grateful for the all of the endless support that I received from my doctors, therapists, family, friends, coaches, and anyone else that helped me through this. I want nothing more than to give back and do my part. Research in scoliosis has come a long way, but there is always more to learn and there is always room for advancement. The Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation is dedicated to supporting discoveries and to advance in the treatment of scoliosis all over the world. Hello! My name is Katerina Petroff and I am currently dealing with scoliosis. I was diagnosed at the age of 13 with a slight curve. The curve quickly increased, and I was prescribed a back brace and physical therapy to prevent the curve from worsening and hopefully avoid surgery. As an athlete, I struggled with practice and competitions, but thanks to my treatment and several specialists I am able to continue the sport I love. I would like to raise money to fund further research on this condition and improve the lives of other adolescents with scoliosis. Thank you all, Katerina Petroff

Since being diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 4, I have faced many challenges. I started off wearing the providence brace to bed. Due to some changes in the degree of my curve, I have recently switched to wearing the Rigo Cheneau brace for 21 hours per day. Even though I have moved multiple times since I was diagnosed with scoliosis, I have always been able to receive the treatments I needed. I have chosen to raise money for this foundation as my mitzvah project for my upcoming bat mitzvah, because this is a cause that I keep very close to my heart. All of the money raised will go to the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation. This foundation raises awareness and educates families about scoliosis. Thank you for your support, Lainey Kushkin

At my 15-year annual checkup, I was diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with an “S” curve - 57 degrees on the top curve and 72 degrees on the bottom. As one of the more severe cases they have seen, surgery was the only option. On November 11, 2019, I had full spinal fusion surgery at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, performed by Dr. Sponseller. After an 8-hour surgery, my spine was fused from T4 – L4 with two titanium rods and 22 screws. I also woke up 2.5 inches taller. This surgery was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through, and I made it with the support of my family, friends and the amazing medical community. Advances in therapy and research are not possible without financial support. I have made it my mission to raise both funds and awareness for a cause that changed my life forever. Every $1 provides an hour of scoliosis research to further advance spinal deformity treatments. Thank you so much for your support, Leah Themistokleous

Hi family and friends! Thank you for taking the time to visit our page. ⁣Liam is our amazing real-life teddy bear who knows no fear and is always climbing (at the playground) to new heights. At 2 years old, Liam also is our scoliosis warrior and the most resilient little man we know.Halfway through my pregnancy with Liam, we found out that Liam has significant congenital scoliosis- a spinal deformity in which a sideways curvature of the spine is caused by a defect at birth. Because the spine forms at the same time as other organ systems in the early weeks of pregnancy, babies with congenital scoliosis may also have bladder, kidney, spinal cord, or nervous system problems. Due to the severity of Liam’s spinal curvature, we were told it was possible that he would not be able to walk. On multiple occasions during pregnancy, including the day Liam was born, we learned we were in for a long journey because of his congenital scoliosis diagnosis. After Liam was born, he defied all odds and has met every milestone— he is our walking miracle. He inspires us everyday and reminds us that nothing is impossible.Even before Liam was born, he’s had an amazing team of doctors who have been monitoring him to ensure he’s healthy and growing. We’re grateful for modern medicine and God’s grace. We pray and trust that Liam is in good hands. He is strength, resilience, and joy- all wrapped into one little guy.In an effort to create awareness and advocate for raising funds to support scoliosis research and education, our family is volunteering with the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation- a cause that is close to our hearts. For #GivingTuesday and in light of the upcoming holidays, please consider donating to the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation to help empower other families with a similar journey get support and learn more about scoliosis. Hello! My name is Megan Kehoe and in fifth grade I was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. Since then, I have received bracing treatments and a spinal fusion surgery. Now, as a senior in high school, I know it is my turn to give back as I have conducted research regarding the relationship between idiopathic scoliosis and self-esteem. Through this research it became aware to me how necessary it is to fund more inquiry regarding scoliosis as the field needs as many donations as it can obtain. Scoliosis is sometimes seen as so common it is overlooked regarding how much of an impact it can have on lives. I always felt like I was alone but the funds raised here will help to research ways to prevent, solve, and aid those with scoliosis.

The summer after I turned 15, my doctor decided it was best for me to have the surgery because the curves in my spine were continuing to progress. I had the surgery and now I am 17 years old and am better than ever. I truly have to thank God, my doctors, and the medical advancements made for scoliosis. Hello, my name is Sarah and I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 15. I immediately went through spinal fusion surgery about 4 months after diagnosis due to the severity of the curvatures of my spine. While recovery was immensely difficult, this experience taught me perseverance and patience, which ultimately contributed to the person I am today. The mission of the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation is to support the discovery of advancing technologies for the treatment of various adolescent spinal deformities. The future of medicine and patient treatment is though research that can ultimately improve upon peoples' quality of life. Without previous research shedding light on modern scoliosis treatment, I would still be suffering with a deformity that would have negatively impacted my daily functioning. Supporting future avenues of research in spinal deformities will provide patients with effective treatment options that can help them live healthy lives.
