What's happening at Lake Arbor Apartments is on all of us. Residents of Lake Arbor Apartments were informed via letter on July 30, 2019 the intent of the landlord to vacate all units beginning August 31, 2019 following a multitude of complaints surrounding unsafe living conditions at the property. For residents at the 177 apartments who received the vacate letters, finding affordable housing in such a short period of time presents many challenges that require a focused and collaborative response. Days ago, representatives from each agency involved in this crisis effort came together in agreement that a solid plan must be developed to address the current situation for these soon-to-be-displaced families. While no single agency has the capacity to tackle this problem alone, our primary role here at United Way of Central Carolinas is to lend support and act as a convener among our partnering agencies in developing a comprehensive plan of action. We are committed to helping the Lake Arbor families by leveraging our Critical Need Relief Fund to engage the community and others in raising money to help in their time of great need. United Way of Central Carolinas will accept donations to their Critical Need Relief Fund through August 31, 2019. Going forward, Charlotte must focus on building more affordable housing and making sure the 150,000 Charlotte families who are vulnerable to housing displacement have a place to go.
