SEAP provides financial assistance to students facing emergencies. We cover everything from car repairs and housing damage to essential utilities and medical care—financial burdens that have the potential to delay or derail students' progress towards a degree. This program helps keep their dreams alive, and it's made possible by contributions from donors like you. Thank you! About the Student Emergency Assistance Program The purpose of the Friends of the University Student Emergency Assistance Program is to provide financial assistance to UAFS students who find themselves in a temporary emergency situation. Emergencies are considered circumstances beyond a student’s control. In most cases, assistance will not exceed $1,000 per academic year. Funding for this program is provided by private gifts raised through the UAFS Foundation. We assisted 53 students (since March 2020). Spent $33,980.56 Avg of $641.14/student. The most commons things are rent, utility bills (including internet), and car repairs. A Message from the Dean of Students "Before I became involved with the Student Emergency Assistance Program, I assumed our students were happy-go-lucky people. When I met with students in my office, they always seemed so cheerful and happy. Sure they may have had an issue or two, but nothing some good advice couldn’t fix. "After one semester working with this program, I realized that some of our students are not okay. They just are not okay. Some of our students go to class knowing that sitting at home on their kitchen table is a utility shut-off notice, or when they return home, there may be an eviction notice on their front door. Many of our students are living paycheck to paycheck, so when that flat tire comes out of nowhere or when they have an unexpected doctor’s visit, it is a big financial burden. That burden might also delay or derail their progress towards a degree. These sudden emergencies can become dream enders. We cannot allow that to happen." -Dr. Dave Stevens, associate vice chancellor for student affairs & enrollment management and dean of students. The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Alumni Advisory Council established the Alumni Legacy Scholarship in 2015 to encourage children, siblings, and spouses of University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, Fort Smith Junior College, and Westark alumni to attend their families' alma mater and perpetuate the UAFS legacy. About Our Scholarship Since 2015, we have awarded 11 students a $1,000 scholarship, but turn away many each year. It is our goal to never say no to a student. This year we plan on awarding 4 students our scholarship. We appreciate any donations to help grow our lion family. Rick Goins, our director of Alumni Affairs says "We’re proud we’ve be able to award $11,000 in scholarships to 11 deserving students over the last 6 years, but saddened we were unable to do so for over 170 others due to lack of funds. Our dream, which we are asking you to support, is to grow our endowment to the point we can say yes to every legacy student who applies." Who is an Alum? We consider anyone who passed 14 hours of credit at FSJC or Westark or anyone completed a certificate, associate degree or bachelor’s degree at UAFS an alum. Can Students still Apply for this Scholarship? Yes! Students can apply for our scholarship through June 1, 2021. Please contact us for more information at alumni@uafs.edu. Stay Connected With Us! We use our social media to share alumni highlights, university updates, and of course all of our events. Connect with us today!
