A combined 38 years of teaching between Matt and I at EGRMS, three kids and members of the EGR community are a few reasons why school funding is so important to me. I could sit back and be thankful that my oldest graduated this year and now I have a 10th grader and an 8th grader. However, my heart refuses to stay quiet and hope this problem corrects itself! We have so many young children that deserve the opportunity to experience our “Tradition of Excellence” that my children have had the gift of receiving. There are many ways of helping that do not involve giving money. Maybe you are called to spread the word to neighbors that do not have school age children yet, advocate for school funding or clean your closets out for the community garage sale. On Sunday, July 19, 2020, I'm running a half-marathon distance -- 13.1 miles -- to raise money for the East Grand Rapids Public Schools through One East, a community-wide effort to help our schools through these incredibly challenging times. Due to Covid-19, our school district faces a funding shortfall of more than $2 million. Every dollar raised through One East will help preserve vital school programs that might otherwise be cut. The catch is that I have not trained for a half-marathon. So instead of running the 13.1 miles all at once, I'm running one mile each hour for 13 hours, starting at 6 a.m. I'm hoping that with plenty of time to rest between miles, I'll be fresh and ready for the final 1.1 during the 6 p.m. hour. Help me save our schools! I'm looking for sponsors. Can you kick in just a dollar a mile for a total donation of $13.10? (More is great, too, of course.)I'll be donating myself: a dollar for each minute I spend running. So I have a financial incentive to go as fast as I can, but the schools benefit from my slowness.

This was a family effort done by all four of us! Our goal was to raise $1,000 for all OUR kids, and help OUR community. We were successful to a tune of $1,266.82. Our family decided to match up to $2,000 of it! So in total our little hot dog stand raised $3,266.82! GO EAST!

Since the schools are re-opening, and there are prescribed precautionary steps that need to be taken. EGRPS has recommended, "Each child is required to wear a face mask. The district recommends that your child have five masks, one for each day of the week. Cloth masks must be washed."
