Because I’ve supported this team, and for several reasons, am moved to put my body where my money is. Swimming has been my moving meditation in 2020-21. I started as physical therapy, and it’s become mental therapy as well. Swimming is how I’ve healed from injury, been sad and let go of anger, and find peace in challenging and strengthening myself. I’ve listened and learned throughout. I realized, when taking lessons and practicing to correct my poor form, that I literally could not think about anything but breathing. That, alone, unexpectedly provided much mental relief from pandemic stressors. Now that I have a more efficient stroke(s!), I think about others. What about the friends and folks going through worse than me? If I think swimming is hard, and it’s a choice, can I swim harder on behalf of those who can’t this year? Yes, and I can dedicate that effort to them through participating in this fantastic annual fundraiser that benefits the work of the Women's Cancer Resource Center. I dedicate this event to my beloved grandmother, Joanie, who passed away of breast cancer before I had the pleasure of being held in her arms, as well as to Dr. Lila Baker, a trusted friend and important member of our community who fought her best until the very end. If there is one important lesson I gathered from Dr. Lila, it is that no matter how the daunting or challenging the circumstances you may face are, it is important to stay positive, put on a brave face, and persevere, the same way she did in the face of more heartache, pain, and struggle than we will ever realize. This event is an important part of who I am, having participated since I was eight years old alongside my family, to now, nearing 24, pursuing the tradition and raising money for a beautiful cause along the way. Any donation, big or small, will make every lap I complete that much more meaningful. I want to express my gratitude for your support, be it a good luck, a text, or a dollar, and I look forward to thanking each and every one of you following my race and my journey for this cause that is so truly important to me.
