My Story In the beginning of December 2012, life was great! My wife Lori and I were so happy and so proud of both our children. Our daughter Emma was just finishing up her first semester in college, and our son Cole was a sophomore in high school. Lori felt something was not right in her abdomen and saw a doctor. In less than a week (after a series of tests) we headed to the doctor to find out if something was wrong. The doctor walked in and said, "Lori, you have Cholangiocarcinoma. There is a 15% survival rate to live 5 years. There is no treatment available and your only option is surgery. We have you scheduled for next week to have your tumor removed from your liver." Unfortunately, surgery was not an immediate option for Lori because the tumor rested against a major artery. Her gallbladder was removed and replaced with an infusion pump to apply high doses of chemo directly on her tumor. The goal was to shrink the tumor enough for surgery to become an option. During this time, the cancer spread to her lungs and surgery could no longer remove all her cancer. We later discovered that the National Cancer Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)) was performing immunotherapy treatment trials. NIH is the federal government research hospital in Bethesda Maryland. Lori's case was accepted by NIH and the trial was successful. Her tumors grew, and she went back for a second trial modified to include a certain drug. NIH had to request a "compassionate exemption" from the Food and Drug Administration since this trial was so new and not yet tested. The second trial was also successful. However, the cancer had now spread to her brain. Because immunotherapy does not work on the brain, her trials at NIH ended. After a successful professional career, Lori left to raise our children. When diagnosed, she had recently taken a job as an assistant in the main office of an elementary school because she loved kids. Prior to going to NIH, Lori did have the surgery to remove the tumor from her liver. Because the liver grows back like the arm of a starfish, the starfish became the symbol of her cancer journey. The night before we left for Lori's second trial at NIH, she was on Facebook and showed me that all the teachers and staff had changed their Facebook home page to a starfish. As a testament to how profoundly Lori touched the lives of others, the elementary school dedicated the entire south side of the front of the elementary school as a bird sanctuary in her name. It is called the "Lori B. Whiting Bird Sanctuary" and has starfish stepping-stones. A starfish in her memory also resides in front of the library inside the school. Lori never seemed afraid. Instead of saying "why me," she said "why not me, the cancer just wants to live too." She constantly found silver linings and things to be thankful for in her daily life. Her attitude was extremely positive. Once, she asked me to take a video of a procedure to share with other cancer patients so they would not be scared. She also took the time to prepare her family members for being strong after she was gone. In the fall of 2016, Lori decided to stop all treatment. Our daughter took off for a semester of college and came back home, and our son (who had recently moved out) also moved back home so we could all be together. On the eve of October 11, 2016, Lori died peacefully in the arms of both my children and me. While going through trials with Lori, I could not find much information about Cholangiocarcinoma. Therefore, it has become my personal mission to raise money and awareness about this cancer type. To achieve my mission, I will be attempting to swim across the English Channel in July of 2022. My wife, Sarah, is a strong and brave woman. She has been dealing with bile duct cancer since diagnosis in July 2020. She endured four-plus months of chemo and has most recently been taking gene therapy medication and has had two procedures involving implanting Y90 in both lobes of her liver. In late July I am once again participating in RAGBRAI, the Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa, to raise awareness of this little-known disease as well as raise funds for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation so others may benefit from your generosity. Sarah may not benefit directly and/or indirectly, but others will. I appreciate any donation you might make–big, small or medium–as a way to honor my wonderful wife, a wonderful mother and grandmother, as well as help others who deal with this rare form of cancer. It's a way of paying forward. The ride is 450 miles. You can donate per mile or a lump some. I appreciate whatever you choose to do. RAGBRAI is not a race. It is week-long event or "happening" that brings together thousands of people in harmony from all around our wonderful country and the world. It starts in western Iowa near the Missouri River and ends in eastern Iowa along the Mississippi River. In between, the bike ride covers 450-plus miles over seven days with overnight and day visits to numerous communities along the way. The generous spirit of Iowans is amazing and this event doesn't take place without their generous spirit sharing what they appreciate with others. In a week's time there will be 20,000-plus riders, many of whom will meet for the first time and become friends. Sarah is the most generous person I know. She gives of her time, talent and treasure and doesn't know the word, "no." It's not in her vocabulary. . .when it comes to helping others. A former AFS exchange student who lived in Glasgow, Scotland, she is a woman of the world who loves to travel and has expanded my world view mightily. Thanks to her, we've hosted 14 exchange students, which has been a great blessing. Some of our former exchange students are featured in the photos. The CCF has been a great benefit to Sarah so giving back seems the natural and proper thing to do....so that others will benefit. I am so impressed with CCF and what the organization does that embarking on this adventure is what I need to do.

We (Zach and Stacy) have decided to run the Maui Oceanfront Marathon on January 15, 2023! Our Father, Joseph, and my fiancée, Kia are going to participate in the 5k as well! The Hawaiian Islands held a special place in our Mother's heart as she thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the sunshine and floating in the waves. Our Mother also loved gardening, reading, sewing, and tennis, but above all, during the entirety of her life, she adored and put her family first. She was a devoted wife of 45 years to her husband and a champion supporter of her children. It is hard to imagine, but a year has passed since my husband, John Blonder died. Feels like a second and a century. He was the love of my life, a father, a grandfather, a mentor, a friend to many, and he died way too soon from the vicious and rare form of cancer known as cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). We fought hard, but once diagnosed, it was only five months from diagnosis to death. That’s what makes this bile duct cancer so insidious. By the time anyone realizes they have it, it is most often too late. And that is why you are hearing from me. In John’s memory, I want to raise awareness and fund research. I also want at long last (since Covid robbed all his family and friends of the opportunity) to memorialize him in a way that would make him happy. So, I have decided to combine the two – fund raising and memorializing. First, the fund-raising: It is easy to donate, either through this fund raising page or by texting teamccf11 to the number 71777, and ALL the proceeds will go towards research and awareness. Not only should people be aware of the symptoms, but medical personnel must take the chronic complaints, so often fobbed off to some other ailment, seriously enough to start the testing for CCA much earlier. That is the ONLY way to catch this killer before it’s too late. All I ask is that you give what you can, and when you do, remember John and smile. As for the memorial, on June 5th, John’s family and friends will hold the John Blonder Memorial Ride. We are enthusiastic motorcycle riders, and we love to explore the back roads, mountains, rivers, and lakes of beautiful East Tennessee, our home for the past twelve years. We have one particular day ride that we enjoyed often with family and friends, so on the 5th, we will travel the backroads to the Clinch Mountain Overlook, which is also a veteran’s memorial, then on to Angelo’s in the Gap, which is near the Cumberland Gap National Park, and then the final stop will be at Bubba Brew’s on Norris Lake. We realize not everyone rides motorcycles, but everyone with a set of wheels is invited. If you knew John and want to remember him, then you need to join us. If you want to ride for a great cause, then you need to join us. I really hope to see you on the 5th in remembrance of John (more details to come), and I hope to raise some funds, so someone else’s family and friends don’t have to watch their loved one die from CCA. That’s what John would want! TeamCCF began in 2016 as a way to raise money through athletic events for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Through the years, TeamCCF has participated in numerous races such as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the TCS New York City Marathon, the Denver/Colfax Marathon and the Philadelphia Half Marathon.

Racing for Hope

Why? Why would I run 26.2 miles every month for a year? Well, that's an easy and hard question to answer. The easy answer is that I don't want other families to experience what my family has the past 2 years. The hard part is I feel like my why changes almost daily. So let's start at the beginning. In December 2019, my wife, best friend, and soul mate was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma. She was pregnant with our youngest daughter at the time. She had surgery to remove her gallbladder, and that's when they found cancer and had to also remove part of her liver as well as gallbladder and lymph nodes. We were told that they had never seen cancer she had and that we should abort our baby. Well if you know Mandy, then you know she does her homework. She thankfully found CCF as well as Hope for Two. From there, we learned she could go through chemo and keep our little girl! After chemo and giving birth to Lily, we had moved to scans every 3 months. Unfortunately, Mandy's employer changed insurance companies to a cheaper plan. In June 2021, we have had to fight with the insurance company to cover the scans which could help find cancer early enough to save my wife's life. Well after fighting, we won! We got the life-saving scan in the end of June 2021. On that scan, they found a spot that was of concern. When they did the biopsy, they also did an ablation to burn the cancer out. The radiologist said when he touched the spot that he was 100% positive that it was cancer. Mandy is now recovering and is hopefully cancer-free again.... hopefully it's for good! But if for some reason she isn't, she will continue to fight, and I will continue to be there with support and love for her. She will get to see our girls grow up, and we will grow old together! That's because she fights and because the CCF will continue to fund research and hopefully find a cure. Running for Anna

Dear friends and family, I'm writing you today with a heartfelt request for your support in honoring the love of my life and best friend, my lobster, my wife, Anna, and raising awareness for a cause that is deeply personal to our family. Last year, we lost Anna to a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Cholangiocarcinoma, or Bile Duct cancer. This devastating disease affects only 10,000 people in the U.S. each year. Because it is a rare cancer, it is difficult to secure funding for research and treatment compared to more common cancers. Anna's diagnosis was particularly shocking as she was only 47 years old, far younger than the typical age range (60-70) for this type of cancer. The grim reality of Cholangiocarcinoma is that early detection is extremely challenging, and by the time symptoms appear, the cancer has often progressed to an advanced stage and the survivability rate is extremely low. Anna faced her illness with unwavering courage and grace. She never lost hope. Her strength and resilience continue to inspire me every day. In Anna's memory and to support others battling this relentless disease, I will be running the Miami Half Marathon on January 28, 2024, as a fundraiser for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. I'm setting an ambitious goal for donations, but I know that with your help, we can make a significant impact. Anna touched so many lives and many people loved her. I'm confident that her legacy will live on through our collective efforts to combat this devastating disease. Please consider making a donation, no matter how small, to support my fundraising campaign and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Your generosity will help fund crucial research, provide support for patients and their families, and ultimately bring us closer to a cure. Thank you for taking the time to read my message. Your love and support mean the world to our family.

Stewart's Strength

Hello friends and family, This summer I will be training for the 2022 Chicago Marathon and in memory of Stewart I would like to dedicate these many miles of running to him. My final and longest training run will be a 20 mile race on September 18, 2022 on Chicago's lakefront. Please consider making a donation to reach my fundraising goal for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF). CCF is the only non-profit organization in North America exclusively dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare but deadly cancer that has very little name recognition or awareness. Due to this lack of visibility, it is often overlooked as symptoms can mimic those of other illnesses and diagnosis comes too late. Conventional cancer treatments remain ineffective against cholangiocarcinoma, and most people diagnosed with advanced disease have less than a 5% chance of surviving at least five years. While almost 2 out of 3 people with bile duct cancer are 65 or older, people of nearly any age can be diagnosed. There has been an alarming increase in the past decade of young individuals being diagnosed in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s. Throughout Stewart's battle with this unforgiving disease his courage, his unrelenting spirit, his faith, and his love for friends and family were the most powerful of forces. I will be running all these miles to honor the immense strength and intensity that is Stewart Mather. If you would like to join me running any mileage for Stewart this summer please contact me! You may also text TeamCCF94 to 71777 to make a donation.

Laurie Kundrat loved being active in nature with her family and friends no matter the season. But, above all, Laurie loved biking on the trails across Minnesota, especially on the Lake Wobegon Trail in Central Minnesota. In fall 2019, Laurie was diagnosed with stage 3 cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer, a rare and aggressive cancer. Laurie received excellent care at the Mayo Clinic and Coborn's Cancer Center, but she passed away suddenly in January 2022, possibly from a complication of her cancer. Through her diagnosis, treatment, and remission, Laurie was incredibly strong and brave. Two weeks after her surgery to remove her tumor, Laurie was hiking in Stearns County Quarry Park. Two months later, despite the fact she was undergoing chemotherapy every couple of weeks, she was cross-country skiing again. The following two+ years found her squeezing in as much life and joy and family and friend time as possible. She continued traveling, biking, skiing, walking in nature, and contributing to scientific studies. This fundraiser is inspired by Laurie's adventurous spirit, love of biking with friends and family, and passion for science. We are raising money to support the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) to help find a cure. We will be biking on the Lake Wobegon Trail on Sunday, September 18, 2022. We will start at the St. Joseph, MN trailhead. (We'll start around 10am, but start times are up to you!) Possible options are to bike from St. Joe to Avon and back (16 miles total), St. Joe to Albany and back (28 miles total), or St. Joe to Holdingford and back (49 miles total). Mileage (and safety and water/food) is up to you! Please join us! You can participate in four ways. 1) Donate directly to CCF through our team page to help reach our goal of $3,000 for cholangiocarcinoma research. Any amount helps! 2) Buy a Team Laurie t-shirt designed by Minneapolis artist Dana Koehler and 100% of the profits will go to our fundraising campaign. About t-shirts: T-shirts are $40 each. The unisex, soft t-shirts are gray with a full-color design (see design in the above photo carousel). If you want to order t-shirts, please email teamlaurie2022@gmail.com and let us know quantity and size(s). Order by Sept 2. Please pay Lisa directly so she can coordinate the ordering and donation. She will give you her Venmo address and other options when you email. How to pick up: You can arrange to pick up your t-shirt in Minneapolis or at the event on Sept 18. If you live out of state, also email your address so we can mail your t-shirt. 3) Ride your bike for Laurie on Sept 18, 2022. If you are planning to ride your bike, RSVP to teamlaurie2022@gmail.com. 4) Share Laurie's story and fundraiser with others. Jerry's Blue Jays

In August 2019, Jerry Szczur was diagnosed with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile ducts in his liver. Bile ducts carry bile from the liver and gall bladder to the small intestine where it helps digest fats from food. Jerry was 53 when diagnosed. He initially responded to the standard of care chemotherapy regimen, but after 6 months, the cancer in the liver started to spread. Over the next 16 months, Jerry participated in a few clinical trials and ventured to see specialists at MD Anderson in Texas and UPMC in Pittsburgh. In the end, Jerry succumbed to the ravages of the disease and died June 8, 2021. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation’s (CCF) mission is to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma. Founded in 2006, in Salt Lake City, UT, by a family who lost a loved one to cholangiocarcinoma, CCF has grown to become the leading global resource in research, education, and public awareness. It is almost unheard of that a rare cancer has such a robust resource group. The CCF is a global 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Kathy and Jerry used the resources of the CCF during Jerry’s 22-month battle with his cholangiocarcinoma and Kathy continues to partake of their offerings, such as their bereaved caregivers support group and their annual scientific meetings. In November 2020, in response to the global pandemic, the CCF began a virtual Turkey Trot fundraiser. Jerry and Kathy and their kids participated in this inaugural event. The event was held in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, the team, Jerry’s Blue Jays, was formed in memory of Jerry by Beth Berlage, a good friend of Kathy and Jerry's. Last year, we had participants from California to Chicago to Cleveland and raised over $1500 for the CCF. That was AWESOME! THANK YOU! It has come to our recent attention that the CCF is not going to promote a Turkey Trot for 2023, so it is up to us to pivot and continue the tradition. Because we just learned of this decision, this year will be kind of straightforward in that we would humbly ask you to contribute to the CCF in memory of Jerry. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer you any kind of swag or merch or cute t-shirts with a turkey on them, but that is our plan for 2024, so stay tuned! In keeping with the theme of the previous trots, sometime on Thanksgiving day or during that week (or honestly, when you have a minute), do something and think of Jerry. That can mean hiking in Arizona and finding a saguaro cactus with an arm in the shape of a “J” or taking a walk with your kiddos and/or dogs or going to a park and enjoying the fresh air or just sitting on your couch and watching a game. Whatever it might be, take a moment to be thankful for all of your blessings. If you were lucky enough to have known Jerry, I would bet that you can think of a memory and smile. Please consider donating to this incredible foundation in honor of Jerry. If you do contribute and do anything fun with Jerry in mind, please send me a picture and I can share those next year! Thank you for your love and support!

Alex and Galileo Research TRY to end Cholangio!

TeamCCF began in 2016 as a way to raise money through athletic events for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Burning Survivors and Galileo Research are teaming up to raise money for CCF this year to honor and hold in memory Toka Ball, an incredible artist, friend, supporter and light in the world who was also a Burning Survivor, living her life to the fullest until she was gone. What is Burning Survivors?Burning Survivors began as a walk at the Burning Man in 2006, and continues to this day, to celebrate the fact that we are negotiating cancer and living our lives. We are radically surviving. We are community. We are present. What is a TRY?Some days when dealing with cancer, all you can do is TRY to walk outside for a moment or TRY to get up the stairs. But at other times you feel like you can TRY to climb a mountain. A TRY is anything YOU can do physically to push yourself forward, and at the same time assist another in the community who needs help. A TRY is any physical feat you train for, push yourself to do, and raise money for your favorite cancer-related non-profit organization. For some, it can be a triathlon or climbing a mountain, while for others walking a 5k or even around the block is a huge feat. Our team are each choosing a TRY that is meaningful to us! Alex, founder of Burning Survivors, is going to climb Mt. Greylock. Before cancer, she was able to climb easily, but decades later it feels insurmountable. It's time to TRY and push to get it back. Karen is doing a Swim/Run duathlon to go beyond her routine and add an element she isn't used to. Hina is swimming 50 laps to push herself to confront her fear of swimming. Sarah is going to represent the marathon that is cancer by running 1 mile every hour for 12 hours, truly embodying never stopping Mary is going to get on a bike and ride some hills in New Hampshire, representing how the ups and downs are what it's about. Jess is going to take the day to walk 10 miles up the West Side highway, through different paths, people and to the bridge, traversing beyond where she's gone before Michelle is stretching herself to pick running back up and chart a 5-mile course through Portland, OR, and bringing in some inspiration and help from her community, moving on to do a CrossFit WOD!

TEAM MARRAH

Hello family and friends! We are excited to start a annual walk in honor of Marrah, who was the youngest to be diagnosed at the age of 23 years old . She was a beautiful, loving , caring daughter, sister, wife and friend to many. It is our hope to be able to learn more and educate people on this horrible disease. Marrah was diagnosed on July 2, 2020 and passed away on July 2, 2021. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) is the only non-profit organization in North America exclusively dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Approximately 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed each year with this hard-to-diagnose, difficult-to-treat, fatal type of cancer.

A year ago, I had no idea what cholangiocarcinoma was. Turns out, it's bile duct cancer - super rare and very deadly. It's almost always caught at a late stage. This is what happened to one of my favorite people in the world - the person who formed who I am today. In May 2022, my mom seemed fine. In June 2022, she developed an ache in her right side and a fever. On July 5th she was in the ER with sharp pain. And only a month later -- on August 6th -- God took her home. It was the most devastating time of my life. I am training for the Fox Valley Marathon in St. Charles in honor of my mom and to celebrate the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. And I am running it to raise money for research and care for those impacted by this devastating disease that steals life too quickly. Although I have been running since I was 16, I have never ran a marathon. Doing it with this purpose is frankly the only reason I would run one -- I want to make a difference and run with purpose. Will you help me by making a donation in any amount? You will be changing the lives of those affected by this rare disease. And... you can follow me on race day and as I train! All those who donate will get regular updates on my training and a little bit of information about cholangiocarcinoma. About my mom: You can read a bit about Nancy Diane Fortunak's life here. You can learn about the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation here. Please join me in celebrating my mom and in encouraging others impacted by this dreadful disease! Every dollar matters!

Running For The Big Cat

I was never the runner in my family. The only times I ran over the years was when I forced myself, so that I could spend time with my dad in his element. There was something both inspiring & humbling in getting dusted by my “old man,” almost 4 decades my senior. I was always in awe of his unwavering resolve. Even then, it wasn’t lost on me that how he ran was a metaphor for how he lived. Eventually, I would come to insist on only running with him at a track. After all, being out-lapped wasn’t as obvious as trailing miles behind. Plus, that way we could still talk and he could still encourage me by pointing out how much easier he made it look! I still laugh thinking about the 5k we ran together up Sleeping Giant Mt. Unprepared and under-committed, I sucked wind as he turned around to run backwards and talk to me at a conversational pace. I could tell that holding back was torture for him. But he wouldn’t leave my side. “Seriously, please go, you could probably win this thing!” A couple of “are you sure’s?” later, he did… and he did. He took first place in his age group despite the head start that he gave the field while running backwards with me. Instead of cheering when I finished, my friends at the finish line said “dude, your dad finished a while ago. Like, a while.” I smiled to myself thinking “you’re darn right he did.” I couldn’t care less that he beat me. I was just proud to be first place’s daughter. So on the heels of what would have been his 75th birthday on 2/8 and coincidentally two days before World Cholamgiocarcimona Day, it only seemed fitting to honor his legacy by running a half marathon, a distance that I wouldn’t have felt possible for myself during those early track days. All while raising awareness for the cause that ultimately took his life. But not his light. After all, the "Big Cat" finished well ahead of me, but still taught me not to stop. Who knows, maybe a marathon will be next! Approximately 8,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with this hard-to-diagnose, difficult-to-treat, cancer. Conventional cancer treatments remain ineffective against cholangiocarcinoma, and most people diagnosed with advanced disease have less than a 5% chance of surviving five years. I plan to run the Providence Marathon on May 7, 2023. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation is working to find a cure for this aggressive cancer, while in the meantime providing support and advocating for patients. My dad insisted that the team name be after the surgical oncologist at Yale who has given him a chance at beating this deadly cancer.

For Lou (Round 2)

I lost my grandmother to cancer in April 2020. She was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma in February 2020 & from there she decompensated quickly. Prior to this diagnosis she was very healthy and often bragged about having to take less medication than me. The speed at which we went from traveling to Iceland and Aruba together to traveling to oncology appointments was staggering. I think about her daily and can’t believe it has been two years since we lost her. Last year I ran 13.1 miles at the Bristol Independence Road Race and we raised over $2,000! This year I plan to double that distance and (maybe?!) double the money we can raise for CCF. I will be running The Green River Marathon on August 28th. If you're able, I hope you'll join me in honoring her memory (or come to the race I will need all the support I can get)

Dad's Gobble Gang

Thank you for checking out our family's 4th annual Turkey Trot! My family has joined forces with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation once again to raise money in honor of my dad and the girls' papa, Allen Strande. Allen was a loving husband, father, papa and friend to many. He would always have his garage door open and a Twins game on. Anyone that stopped over was welcomed with a cold beer and a seat to watch the game. He loved playing cards and dice games, staying warm by the campfire, and living the sunny life in Arizona every winter after he retired. January 2020 my dad was diagnosed with a rare and untreatable (for him) cancer in the bile ducts of his liver. Bile ducts normally carry bile from the liver to the small intestine where it helps digest fats from food. He was 67 when he was diagnosed. Three months later he was gone. Among those he left behind are his three granddaughters', who still say goodnight to his picture before bed. There isn't a day we don't talk or think about him. Cholangiocarcinoma affects approximately 10,000 individuals each year. 2 out of 3 diagnoses are among people 65 and older. When my dad was diagnosed, there weren't a lot of treatment options. With the money the foundation raises each year, they are able to fund more research and initiate clinical trials. Last year the FDA approved its first drug for cholangiocarcinoma treatment! On Thanksgiving morning my family and I will run/walk 1.6 miles around Lake Como to raise awareness for bile duct cancer and support and educate those affected by cholangiocarcinoma. Please consider donating to this incredible foundation in honor of my dad and the girls' papa. It would mean everything to our family to rid the world of this cancer that took out family member way too soon. Any denomination is welcome. And because I am a science geek, everything donated through my fundraising page will go straight into the cholangiocarcinoma research bucket of the CCF! Thank you for your love and support! With love, Kelly, Nick, Pearl, Layla and Daphne Whitstone

On November 5th, 2023 my mom, Angie, lost her fight to cholangiocarcinoma. I have decided to run the Boise River half marathon in her honor to continue to remind myself and others of how brave and motivating my mom was. She loved the ocean, dogs, eating good food, and of course her family and friends. Giving back to the cholangiocarcinoma foundation is extremely important to me because my mom found so much peace and comfort from the people within the foundation. Thank you for helping me give back to something that means so much to my mom, my family, and I. <3

A few years ago, my sister-in-law's sister was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. I had never heard of that before, so I did some research. I learned that it is rare and aggressive. Fast forward a few years, and a good high school friend, Mark Sawaska, was diagnosed with this terrible cancer, too. He and his wife were part of the "crew" I hung out with in high school, and they were both part of my high school story. Mark is an exceptional athlete, who was well known and loved in our school. You will never meet a nicer guy, who loves life and lives it to the fullest. He and his wife, Ellie, have 3 beautiful adult children and 3 young beautiful grandchildren. They are very involved with their grandkids, and they are such an important influence in the lives of these young humans. I know Mark is a fighter and he will fight this awful cancer, with his wife Ellie beside his side all the way. If anyone can beat this terrible cancer, It is Mark! I am doing a Rock and Roll half marathon on March 16th in Washington, DC, which so coincidentally happens to also be Mark's birthday. I would like to raise funds for this most important organization, CCF, to help them continue helping people diagnosed with cholangiocarcomoma. Any amount is appreciated! Thank you! Hi again! This year I’ll be running the Mount Desert Island Marathon on 10/20 in honor of my grandmother, Lou. It’s hard to believe that February marks 4 years since we first heard the word Cholangiocarcinoma and by April it will have been 4 years since we heard Namas voice. Honestly she would probably be very mad that I’m putting myself through running another marathon but nothing feels big enough to adequately honor her life. HIKE FOR KINS

Dear Friends and Family, I'm writing to you today with a heartfelt request for your support in honoring our friend and brother, Mark, and raising awareness for a cause that has become deeply personal for many of us. Last year, we lost Mark to a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Cholangiocarcinoma, or Bile Duct cancer. This devastating disease affects only 10,000 people in the U.S. each year. Because it is a rare cancer, it is difficult to secure funding for research and treatment compared to more common cancers. Mark's diagnosis was particularly shocking as he was only 50 years old, far younger than the typical age range (60-70) for this type of cancer. The grim reality of Cholangiocarcinoma is that early detection is extremely challenging, and by the time symptoms appear, the cancer has often progressed to an advanced stage and the survivability rate is extremely low. Mark faced his illness with unwavering courage and grace. He never lost hope. His strength and resilience continue to inspire. In Mark's memory and to support others battling this disease, I will be completing THE ONE DAY HIKE - 50K/31M along the C&O Canal Towpath, on April 20, 2024, as a fundraiser for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. I'm setting a goal of $5150 for donations. Why 5150? Van Halen, of course. Mark would have been 51 this year. I am 50. Last year I accidentally hiked 51K. This year, I plan to only do 50. It's an ambitious goal for donations, and I know that with your help, we can make a significant impact. Mark touched so many lives and many people loved him. I'm confident that his legacy will live on through our collective efforts. I’m inviting those of you who may be hikers yourselves, to join me in one way or another. Your donation, no matter how small or large, WILL make a difference! It may not have saved Mark’s life, but it may save the life of someone you love one day. Your generosity will help fund crucial research, provide support for patients and their families, and ultimately bring us closer to a cure. Please join me! You can participate in four ways: 1. Solo Hike - Consider 3.1 Miles and $51.50. 2. Hike with a Friend or Group - Consider taking up a collection 3. Hop in My Backpack - Can't Walk? I Will Carry You. I have room in my Osprey. Consider donating per mile. 4. Share Mark's story and fundraiser with others. Read more about Mark's life A message to friends and family from Seth Thank you for your generous support. Dear Friends and Family, In April I began training for my first endurance event. Also in April, my dear friend Ronda passed away from Intra Hypatic Cholangiocarcinoma. She was my maid of honor, an AXO sorority sister, a godmother to one of my kiddos, and an incredible friend. We lost a woman with a heart of gold, a laugh that could right any sadness, a tremendous voice of reason, a loyal friend, a gifted and devoted teacher, a beautiful and loving mother/daughter/wife. Her diagnosis last summer was advanced, and due to limited treatment options and clinical trials, the disease took her quickly. The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation's mission includes education to advance diagnostics for earlier detection and research to find new and effective treatment options. Out of love for Ronda and in support of this Foundation, I will be https://29029everesting.com this Friday and will be raising funds for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. I will hike Whistler mountain 8 times over 36 hours to equal the height of Mount Everest. While this is an extraordinary challenge I will have a very special angel encouraging me, laughing at and with me and holding me every step of the way. Please join me in making a small difference in a big world filled with countlesss needs and causes. All my love, Sara
