Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, food insecurity is on the rise and there has been an overwhelming demand for assistance from our local food banks. More than 54 million people in the United States may experience food insecurity / hunger in 2020, including 18 million children. Prior to the pandemic, the majority of food donations were made by retail and wholesale suppliers. Food banks are now relying on personal donations to close the gap, including those food banks in our local communities. The Houston Food Bank has reported that the coronavirus pandemic has amplified the already high food insecurity rates across the region. The Houston area food insecurity rate increased by 72%. During this season of gratitude, we are introducing a “First Reserve - Give Thanks, Give Food” initiative. If you would like to participate in supporting our communities in the fight against hunger during these unprecedented times, you may donate food or make donations directly to the Houston Food Bank. Too many people in this world go hungry and we can make a difference! I have an event scheduled at the jailhouse saloon nov27-28 and we’re asking everyone to bring two cans of food. This year, the Menninger Clinic's Giving Back Project is accepting both food and funds to support the Houston Food Bank.
