Hi friends, We always talk about what we want to do to support anti-racism or climate change action. Well, today I am doing something! I am going to a climate action protest in Minnesota! Line #3 in Minnesota will expand the tar sand pipeline through/near a Native American reservation. Hi friends, I'm writing to you all because I just celebrated my 20th birthday on Wednesday, and I'm beyond grateful to have been raised by such a caring community of friends and neighbors. I started my 20th birthday on a 24-hour bus ride back from Anishinaabe land in Northern Minnesota, where I had the chance to join Arm in Arm for Climate in resisting the Enbridge Line 3 Pipeline. You can read all about the pipeline resistance, and what happened to us, in the articles down below. In short, Line 3 would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada to Wisconsin, passing though Anishinaabe lands under the Treaty of 1855 and endangered wild rice beds. It carries a carbon footprint of 16-18 million cars a day. Every pipeline ever built has spilled, and Line 3 would be no exception-- and every piece of fossil fuel infrastructure built means more climate change locked into the future. It is absolutely clear that Line 3 is a tool of ongoing colonization and land theft. I still feel that joining the movement against it is one of the most important things I can do in my life. At one of the protest sites, the DHS flew a border patrol helicopter over our heads to spray debris, rolled out an LRAD sound gun on peaceful protestors and water protectors, and arrested more than 150 people. Thanks to Arm in Arm and the amazing people I went up with, I'm safe and sound, but can't downplay how intense the experience was. Arm in Arm for Climate organized the bus that took me from DC up to Minnesota. They took incredible care of us-- from figuring out meals to bus bookings to action trainings to organizing a hotel for us to stay in and rest. At the action, it became clear that there wasn't enough food or water to sustain the 500+ people there in 90 degree heat. The Arm in Arm DC bus took it on themselves to run hourly supply runs for food, water, medicine, and supplies. I have no doubt they kept people alive in the heat. Because of this, the Arm in Arm team is significantly down on funds. If you can spare a couple dollars toward the cause of stopping Line 3, Indigenous land rights and sovereignty, and a future for my generation, it would mean the world for you to donate here. Indigenous Anishinaabe leaders have put out a call for people to converge on northern Minnesota from June 5-8 and engage in direct resistance to stop Line 3. Line 3 is a tar sands oil pipeline whose intended path cuts from from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin in violation of indigenous rights and crossing the Mississippi headwaters. The pipeline would result in emissions equivalent to 50 coal-fired power plants. Busloads of people are coming from around the country. Can you chip in so myself and others can join the fight against the Enbridge Corporation, which is building the pipeline (with financial support from JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, CitiBank and TD Bank, of course)?
