Twenty years ago on 9/11, I was three blocks from the White House and could see the smoke billowing from the Pentagon across the Potomac. I'm sure you remember where you were, and how you felt. The images of that day were seared into my memory, and the images of sacrifice and leadership in the days that followed were just as powerful. The nation made a promise that day. “We will never forget.” This year, I am joining the 9/11 Ride of Hope organized by the Quell Foundation, to show my commitment to that promise. The mission of The Quell Foundation’s 9/11 Ride of Hope is to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Our aim is to fund the continued development and implementation of the Foundation’s First Responder Mental Health Education and Training Program. As the daughter of a veteran, an person that deals with behavioral health issues in my daily life, and a passionate supporter of those men and women in our first responder community, the mission of this program is my "WHY". This population of public servants has the 6th highest suicide rate, by occupation, due to the compounding, daily trauma they experience on the job. From the 9/11 memorial in NYC to the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, each mile of our journey represents our continued commitment to removing the stigma and normalizing the conversation around mental illness within the first responder community. Together, lets keep our promise to "Never Forget"! And now... "Let's Roll!"

A note from Erich: Where were you when the first plane hit the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001? It was the beginning of a tragedy that is frozen in time. And memories play in my mind like flipping through photos in a 20-year old album. I was in a conference room in CT. Room 4A4 to be exact. The emotions I felt and the images from that day will be etched into my memories forever. I still look back on 9/11 as the day we lost so much, including nearly 3,000 Americans. I also think of the countless brave people. So many everyday heroes who ran toward danger. We made a solemn promise, “We will never forget.” How we live that promise shows up in different ways. For me, I wanted to honor the first responder community on this 20th Anniversary of the attack in our country. The mission of the 9/11 Ride of Hope is to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. This event seeks to raise philanthropic support to fund the continued development and implementation of the Quell Foundation’s First Responder Mental Health Education and Training Program. First responders have the 6th highest suicide rate, by occupation, due to the compounding, daily trauma they experience on the job. We'll start at the 9/11 Memorial in NYC on September 6 and ride as a team to the Pentagon in Arlington, VA - arriving on September 11. Each mile of our journey represents our continued commitment to removing the stigma and normalizing the conversation around mental illness within the first responder community. This ride will be a challenge for me. I have never cycled this amount of distance in five days. Yet the cause is so important and my rigorous training is nothing compared to what first responders cope with everyday - often alone, without the support they need. My goal is to raise $7,500. I would be grateful for your support. Together we can assist the first responder community with the education and training to help them care for themselves - so they can help care for others. I hope you'll consider donating to help create education and training that supports mental health for our everyday heroes. "Let's Roll!" Thank you! Erich

Why I ride. Why we must do better. James Michael Martin Sarabia was loved deeply by many. He had the ability to make most people laugh harder than they ever have. In his presence, you felt loved and safe. James Michael was brave beyond comprehension, always seeking to learn more, advance his service career, and find ways he could care and protect his community. James Michael fought some of the invisible battles from trauma that many firefighters and first responders face. Many in silence. James Michael changed me for the better, which was common for everyone he interacted with. We lost him in 2019 to suicide. The mission of The Quell Foundation’s 9/11 Ride of Hope is to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. This event seeks to raise philanthropic support to fund the continued development and implementation of the Foundation’s First Responder Mental Health Education and Training Program. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration, thanks for letting me share James Michael. I am honored to share the journey that is a continuation of J.M.M.S. "Let's Roll!"

We all remembered where we were 20 years ago on 9/11/01. We remember the emotions we experienced and the images from that day that will be etched into our memories for eternity. Since then, it has shaped how all Americans live their lives. But how will we allow it to shape the next 20 years? Time has passed, but there is no forgetting. We made a solemn promise, “We will never forget.” I'm grateful for your interest in recognizing the 20th Anniversary of the attack on our country through donating to our cause. Approaching 20 years since the towers fell. Words cannot describe how much that event has changed and shaped me. My journey since then has been one of tremendous highs and lows, and ultimately has been one of growth. Constant throughout has been amazing the dedication, bravery and sacrifice of all those who answered the call. For those who perished on that day, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice since then, the words "We Will Never Forget" are more important now than ever. I have seen first hand the enduring impact on the mental wellness of those who answered the call, and it has shown me the vital importance of ensuring that we "Never Forget" the need to address the often unseen and unspoken effects on those men and women. As many of you know, I venture far and wide on two wheels to raise money for organizations I trust to put their maximum effort and resources into the community they serve. Please read the information below to hear more about who this ride supports. We all remembered where we were 20 years ago on 9/11/01. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. "Let's Roll!"

On September 11, 2001, I was walking in the science building when terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center. It was then that I decided I could not wait until after becoming a doctor to defend my country, so I went immediately to the navy recruiter and enlisted. I made an oath of office that I would support and defend the constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I also vowed to #neverforget the events of 9/11, and as we approach the 20th Anniversary, I ask you to support me on a life restoring endurance ride this fall. The journey will not be feasible without you, especially as this therapeutic sport is not often accessible to minorities such as myself. Ultimately, I am very blessed to be joining with Quell Foundation’s 9/11 Ride of Hope, to honor those who made the ultimate on September 11, 2001 while also raising awareness for those first responders, veterans, and health-care workers who struggle with mental health. Our particular population of public servants have the 6th highest suicide rate by occupation, due to the compounding, daily trauma we experienced from our jobs, and subsequent effects. So from the 9/11 memorial in NYC to the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, each mile of our journey represents the continued commitment to removing the stigma and normalizing the conversation around the illness that I am many others continue to fight. I took the picture above on September 10, 2011 from FDNY Engine/Ladder Company 10 at Ground Zero. The next day I left with about 300 recovering, wounded servicemen and women, and rode to Shanksville, PA and then to the Pentagon. At every stop on the 9-day ride, we paused to remember those that lost their lives that day and in the wars that followed. This year, I will be joining The Quell Foundation’s 9/11 Ride of Hope to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001 and to raise money for the Foundation’s First Responder Mental Health Education and Training Program. The program is committed to removing the stigma around mental illness within the first responder community; something I worked hard on with the soldiers of the U.S. Army. The 5-day ride will go from the 9/11 memorial in NYC to the Pentagon, and, although we will miss Shanksville this time, I can honestly say that I will not miss the mountains of western Pennsylvania. Thanks for your support! “We can never forget.”

We all remembered where we were 20 years ago on 9/11/01. We remember the emotions we experienced and the images from that day that will be etched into our memories for eternity. “We will never forget.” Next month, September 11th marks the 20th anniversary of the heinous terror attacks at the World Trade Center in New York; near Shanksville, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. I never imagined that such events could happen in and to our country. I never imagined the structural devastation that occurred at each of those sites. Loss of human life on this scale happened in the past at Pearl Harbor—not during my lifetime. I never imagined as I went to work that morning at the Fleet and Family Support Center in Norfolk that I and five of my colleagues would be assisting with the setup of the Family Assistance Center (FAC) at an Arlington, VA hotel and continue to staff that FAC for nine days. I was awestruck as we arrived in Arlington after dark and passed the Pentagon, where firefighters continued to battle the flames that night as we drove by to get to the hotel. I prayed that I could brace myself to serve victims’ family members who were facing the truly unimaginable. They called in and came into the center for any information about their loved ones they lost in the Pentagon—families of the plane passengers and crew and civilian and military staff at the Pentagon. I never imagined that among them, I would find a former colleague who lost her husband in the Pentagon that morning. What about the surviving family members and staff who witnessed the events first hand? What about the heroic first responders? What about everyone who poured into the city to offer relief. Like all of us, their lives were forever changed—but to a far greater degree. We continue to lose them to ongoing mental health issues as a result of 9/11 and to cancer and other physical ailments that have claimed so many of our first responders. The 9/11 Ride of Hope is a five-day cycling journey—from the 9/11 Memorial in NYC to the Pentagon-- to honor those lost on 9/11 and those suffering from the physical and emotional exposures associated with September 11th, 2001, and its aftermath. I will ride the last day of the event in Arlington—for them and for me. Please join me in supporting The Quell Foundation as they strive to increase access to mental health services, providing a pipeline of future mental health care professionals with scholarships, and training first responders to recognize mental health crisis warning signs amongst their own.
