For me, promoting mental wellness in the community is not just a job - it's a personal mission. I've seen what the right treatment, support and self-care can do - it's life-changing and sometimes life-saving! Learning how to promote my own mental wellness has helped me manage my own anxiety, and I've gained the tools to support others with more understanding, empathy and compassion. I invite you to be a guest at my virtual table to hear some stories from those whose lives have been changed by MHA, and to consider supporting our critical work. My passion to promote mental wellness is personal and professional. I have experienced the life changing effects that access to care, a community of support, and intentional self-care makes for both myself and my clients. Mental Health America has been a place where I have learned skills to better manage my own life challenges as well as a place I have found further support for my clients and their families. I am grateful to have found an inclusive, diverse, and unjudging organization of people who help others build resilience and hope to share this blessing with each of you. It is why I joined the MHA Board when asked. Everyone has the potential to live a purposeful and happy life. Some of us just need a little support than others. I was lucky enough to have found that help when I needed it. MHA is there to provide support for those who were not as lucky me. If you have already sent in a contribution, I want to thank you. If not, I hope you will still consider it. In any case I hope you will join us for A Morning of Renewal and Resilience, and I hope to see you at our breakfast next year.

May is Mental Health Month. More than ever, it’s critical for us to recognize the importance of mental health, for ourselves and our communities. Our collective mental well-being is affected by systemic racism and oppression, home insecurity, and inequitable access to healthcare and education. Through MHA, we can start to address the broader challenges that are keeping our neighbors from thriving. Consider giving to MHA this Mental Health Month. As a community, we don’t move forward as individuals. We’ve got to be in this together. Lisa Adams I have served as a licensed mental health counselor for many years and have come to recognize that few people's lives are untouched by the impact of mental illness and/or trauma. So many people suffer in silence due to the stigma associated with mental health challenges, some have no access to care, are uninsured, or go untreated. The Mission of Mental Health America of Central Carolinas aligns with my continued passionate pursuit to offer the hope that so many desperately need by serving and supporting persons struggling to maintain mental wellness. I am excited to be a Board Member of MHA of Central Carolinas, an organization focused on creating a healthier community for all, through advocacy, education and prevention programs. I first came into contact with MHA at their 2019 Wake up for Wellness event, and it was immediately evident how invaluable the work is they're doing in our communities. The importance of that work has been distinctly highlighted during the last 15 months as we all took a crash course in understanding our own mental health. What the majority discovered is that mental health is a moving target that affects EVERYONE as opposed to a fixed point affecting only some. Fast forward 2 years from the 2019 WUFW breakfast, and I have been lucky enough to join the Board and help lead efforts to jump start Circle of Hope, our young affiliates group -- the primary focus of that group being community as well breaking down the barriers and advancing the message around mental health awareness. Please join me as a guest at my virtual table to hear some stories from those whose lives have been changed by MHA, and to consider supporting our critical work. If you can't attend -- please consider coming to our next quarterly Circle of Hope event at the White Water Center (tentatively June 12th). Each and every person deserves the right to access mental health care services when and where they need them, but sadly that is not always the case. Mental and behavioral health has been a priority issue in Cabarrus County since 2012, we are making small strides in addressing stigma, improving linkages to care, but there is still so much that needs to be done. "The future's so bright (for mental health awareness), I gotta wear shades". Although we have all experienced many negative effects of the pandemic, I believe a silver lining is the awareness of how mental health challenges can affect all of us. This fabulous organization I am affiliated with, now in my 8th year on their BOD, has been there for our community and beyond during this difficult time. I am confident MHA will continue to be there for so many, as we face the challenges of recovery ahead. Please join me in supporting our efforts and join me at my virtual table on May 20.
