Hola! My name is Isabella Dykstra, but I go by Bella. The reason for this fundraiser is to help pay for a Study Abroad trip to Costa Rica through Ferris State University. This is a Faculty lead program starting May 9 to June 6. The cost will cover home stays with the natives, food, transportation, and tuition. While I am there, I will be studying at a 300 level Spanish course, as well as traveling around the country learning the culture, and sightseeing. A little about me: I am a Freshman at Ferris State University studying Dental Hygiene and Spanish for the Professions. I love the Spanish language, and I owe it all to my mom. Both my parents enrolled me in the Spanish Immersion program in school at an early age. I grew up speaking Spanish not just because it's a great language to learn but because my mom is Mexican, and she saw that it essensial for me to communicate with my family in Mexico. My future plans consist of getting both my degrees in Dental Hygiene and Spanish and becoming a travel Hygienist around America, including Central and South America. My hope is to be able to give back to the Hispanic community the best I can because it has given me culture, value, love, and belonging.

Hi everyone, my name is Aleigha Mack, and I am currently a junior at Ferris State University. I am majoring in Marketing/International Business, and planning to minor in Spanish. I am in need of financial support to study abroad in Costa Rica, Spring/Summer 2024. I’m fundraising because I have recognized that I, and others, cannot do this process alone. I am a first-generation student working off campus jobs to support myself in college. I am very determined, having pushed through many difficult obstacles to be able to stay in University. For context, I have been learning Spanish since middle school, and I am currently needing that final push towards fluency, which is where study abroad comes into the picture! It has been my lifelong dream to study abroad in either Costa Rica! When I saw that I had the chance to pursue my dream, I took it; cost was not important. The program that I chose will give me an opportunity to take classes in Spanish, make meaningful connections, and experience everyday life in Costa Rica! ¡Pura Vida!

ReFOCUS at Ferris provides students on academic probation with educational, social, and financial support to focus on having a successful semester, developing a stronger sense of belonging, and regaining good academic standing. Your donation will provide students with academic success materials and personal development tools. Students who are active participants can receive a book voucher. Through the first two cohorts, participants received fewer mid-term grade warnings and felt more involved in the greater university community.

Some updates on our program that keep fueling our passion for what we do: 1) The Spanish for the Professions Scholarship Endowment is less than $1,000 away from becoming a reality as we are currently at $24,240 (and need $25,000 to make it permanent). Of course, we'd like to keep growing it for even more impact! Many thanks to all who have already helped us reach that milestone!!! 2) A record number of Study Abroad students will be going to Costa Rica for Spanish Immersion in 2024 for 4 weeks! 3) Recent Ferris Spanish for the Professions students are/will be in Spanish graduate programs while teaching Spanish with fully funded Master's degrees in Spanish! ¡Felicidades, Paige Williams y Ryan Kachnowski! 4) Dual enrollment at Rockford High School has been ongoing for over a year now with former immersion students! 5) Washington D.C. Conference - Professor Lucero Flores-Páez and Professor Eric Warner will be presenting on our unique Spanish for the Professions program in May 2024! 6) Professor Lucero Flores-Páez - Ferris Volleyball Team Collaboration for a trip to Spain and Portugal with language and culture preparation. 7) New collaborations with Artworks in Big Rapids for Day of the Dead activities have allowed students and community members to shine! 8) Programming! The Spanish Teaching Minor is currently being relaunched (pending approval) and we are exploring options for graduate level professional Spanish courses for Pharmacy and Optometry! 9) Michigan World Language Associate Conference in Oct 2023 in Lansing, MI. The Honors Program at Ferris State University is raising funds for the Maude Bigford Scholarship Endowment. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in the Honors Program of sophomore, junior or senior standing majoring in any program at Ferris State University. The recipient shall have a minimum 3.25 GP A at the time of application. Special consideration is given for students who have demonstrated leadership and service to the community or Ferris State University. Dr Robert Ewigleben was president of Ferris State College from 1971-1984. After his retirement, Dr Ewigleben continued working in education, including being the leader of the feasibility study into creating the DCCL program.
