A transformational scientist, educator and clinician, Dr. Itamar Abrass is beloved by many trainees who benefitted from his outstanding leadership. In 1984, he became the head of the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at UW Medicine, where he initiated a research program, a geriatric evaluation unit, an active consultation service and an ambulatory senior care clinic. Under his leadership, the division experienced tremendous growth in faculty, staff and fellows.

To honor Itamar’s exceptional leadership during his tenure, Dr. May Reed and others have established an endowed fellowship that will provide much-needed support for the Division’s talented fellows. We invite you to join in contributing to the Abrass Family Endowed Fellowship in Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine.

Our geriatric medicine fellows are engaging in groundbreaking research that will help improve the quality of life for older adults. They are working tirelessly to tackle a variety of aging syndromes, including cognitive dysfunction, Alzheimer’s disease, polypharmacy, frailty and falls. Our fellows also engage in research that will lead to meaningful changes in health policy as it affects older adults.

Unfortunately, our third-year fellows do not have funds for research assistance or other expenses that are not covered by career development awards. The recently created Abrass Family Fund will provide essential resources for our fellows to focus on research and career development activities necessary to becoming independent investigators in aging research.
