The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) was established as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. CMAS is an academic unit that provides teaching, research and publications, recruitment and retention, leadership training, academic advising and community service.

The Academic Achievers Program (AAP) is sponsored by CMAS and the Office of the Provost. It was established in the fall of 1994 and is designed to retain and propel more students to graduation. The mission of the AAP at the University of Houston is to recruit underrepresented students. Students who are accepted into the AAP program are eligible to receive a $12,000 four-year scholarship, receive priority registration, and career and leadership opportunities.
