2018 Distinguished Service Award Honorees
Jan S. Bowers, CFCS
Dr. Jan Bowers is the Dean of the School of Education and Human Ecology at SUNY Oneonta, where she administers 37 undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation and family consumer sciences programs. She has served the profession as a teacher, State FCCLA Director, State Department of Education Program Supervisor, teacher educator, and as a university department chair.
She has had more than 65 grants funded to facilitate innovative education initiatives, and received awards for University Distinguished Professor of Service, National FCCLA Distinguished Service, AAFCS Leader, FCSEA Educator of the Year and as an American Council on Education Fellow. AAFCS is honored to celebrate her significant contributions to the field, and thank her for her dedication and ongoing leadership.

Gay Nell McGinnis, CFCS-Retired
Combine an exemplary role model for servant leadership with professional dedication and passion for family and consumer sciences education. Sprinkle in a good dose of critical-thinking skills, creativity, vision, and commitment to the challenges at hand and you have just described the career of Gay Nell McGinnis, CFCS-Retired. Gay Nell achieved professional distinction and excellence in a variety of roles, ranging from effective classroom teaching to statewide oversight of all family and consumer sciences education in Texas through her role with the Texas Education Agency, to her involvement in professional organizations, her work with allied organizations, and finally as a valued staff member at AAFCS.
Gay Nell McGinnis has deeply influenced our profession and all who have worked with her or learned from her. Her messages to staff often concluded with one word, “Onward!” – which was her way to communicate the need to “persistently and boldly move forward and make a positive difference.” She has made an enduring impact on our profession and within our association.
