Agency Name: Susan G. Komen Great Plains

Why your gift is needed:

Susan G. Komen Great Plains provides breast health information and resources to empower individuals to make informed breast care decisions and provides treatment assistance grants for uninsured, underinsured and low-income men and women unable to access care. Komen also invests thousands of dollars every year into research programs to develop new therapies and, one day, to find cures for breast cancer.

What your gift will do:

  • $20 per month helps fund an annual mammogram.
  • $50 helps a breast cancer patient with transportation assistance to screening, diagnostic or treatment appointments.
  • $100 gives someone the opportunity to participate in an 8-week survivorship support education class.
  • $250 gives an uninsured woman access to various screening or diagnostic procedures.
  • $500 is the average cost of core-needle biopsy for someone without insurance.

Agency Summary:

  • Information and referral to services for breast health or breast cancer screenings.
  • Short-term financial assistance for medically underserved men and women, including uninsured and underinsured patients.
  • Educational outreach programs and activities to promote breast health awareness.
  • Assistance in finding and accessing clinical breast cancer trials.
  • The Komen Breast Care Helpline (1-877 GO KOMEN) offers breast cancer support and counseling to anyone with questions or concerns, as well as information on breast cancer clinical research trials. All calls are answered by trained staff Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. CT.
  • More than 6,000 education encounters took place in Nebraska in the past year, including impactful messaging to discuss risk factors, eliminate myths and fears and share progress in detection and treatment.
  • Over 3,000 women received free screenings in Nebraska in the past year, including over 229 in a mobile mammography van. 15 breast cancers were detected through that screening with a better prognosis because of detection.
  • About 3,000 women were benefited from patient navigation services during their breast cancer journey.
  • Over 400 women and families received treatment and survivorship support activities in their breast cancer journey. Travel assistance in the form of gas cards, lymphedema supplies, co-pays, rent, utilities and groceries were some of the services provided.
