Three years ago, Notre Dame Men’s Rowing started an Ergathon to raise awareness for Pancreatic Cancer research at Harper Cancer Research Institute on the Notre Dame campus. This Ergathon was established in the memory of Joseph D. Boyle, a father of a former NDRC senior, who lost his battle to pancreatic cancer in October of 2014. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most underfunded but deadliest of the common cancers, receiving just 1% of cancer funding despite the dismal 4% survival rate.
The team strove to raise awareness and funding for pancreatic cancer through the Ergathon. NDRC rowers rowed marathons (42,195 meters and 2.5 hours) to stand in solidarity with pancreatic cancer victims and their families. Overall, the team raised $42,000 for pancreatic cancer research in the Dr. Reginald Hill lab at Harper Cancer Research Institute. This money was used to test a new regiment of chemotherapy drugs in the Hill lab. We recently received the news of the results from these experimentations, which showed an increased survival rate in animal subjects and promise for human testing!
This year, we hope to raise more money and awareness for pancreatic cancer. Therefore, we ask you to please make a pledge. Through your contribution, we can find a better treatment for this devastating disease and give families hope to fight Pancreatic Cancer.
Go Green Go Purple!
The University of Notre Dame and the Harper Cancer Research Institute will host the Harper Virtual Race from January 28 - February 3, 2018.
During this week, we’re challenging you to step away from the screen and engage in any form of physical activity—running, walking, rowing, swimming—to help raise money for the Harper Cancer Research Institute at Notre Dame. All proceeds from the race will go to the lifesaving work of the Harper Cancer Research Institute.
Thanks to gifts by the Walther Cancer Foundation and two generous Notre Dame families who have been touched by cancer, every dollar raised and mile (or mile equivalent) completed will be matched by $1 for the Harper Cancer Research Institute! (e.g. Joe Domer registers for $20 and runs 7 miles for Jane. Harper receives $27 in matching dollars in honor of Jane)
For questions about format or registration, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
