A Walk for Food and Thought

Kiwimbi is raising funds for our Food for Thought program while also remembering the generosity of people in our home state of New Jersey. We are splitting the proceeds of this event with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

Join us (virtually) as we accompany Moses and Ruth on their daily trek to Kiwimbi's Community Center and Library in rural Kenya, the same trip kids make to and from school daily - and if Kiwimbi weren't providing lunch, they'd go home for lunch as well!

The pandemic has brought illness, financial insecurity and hunger. While students in Kenya are now bringing their little brothers and sisters to share their lunch, food banks in the USA are seeing unprecedented numbers seeking basic nourishment. Hunger knows no borders. We decided to take action and hope you will help us provide meals across the globe!

    It's easy ~ Here's how!

You choose - you can sign up to participate, donate, become one of our fundraisers or all three.

If you sign up to participate, Kiwimbi will provide you with a link so you can join the virtual walk on May 16th at 10 AM (EDT). You can:

    • enjoy a child's eye view of a walk to the source of education and a solid meal
    • join in on your treadmill - set your own speed!
    • get outside and do your own walk (don't worry - you'll be able to watch the video afterwards)
    • or make it a run - you know those kids are late sometimes!
    • while you're at it, would you like to carry some books along? how many can you carry for how long?
    • or grab a jerry can and carry some water on your head?

Consider joining our Fundraisers by asking your friends to join you, or to pledge to support you, or to contribute.

    The possibilities are endless!

Check out our social media page for updates - we'll have some fun postings on what you can do to prepare for the big day!

A Joint Adventure Serving Kiwimbi and

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey

Kiwimbi sees a world where all people are empowered through education to enrich their lives and reach their fullest potential. To accomplish this, our mission is to partner with underserved communities world wide to create educational opportunities through locally run learning centers.

Our first such Learning Center in rural Kenya includes the first free public library there which gets books to kids at over 70 schools. Our Food for Thought program focuses on providing resources, including daily lunch, enabling approximately 200 students to learn so that they can prepare for the exam that determines whether or not they can continue with their education beyond Grade 8.

With schools closed due to the pandemic, one might expect that fewer lunches would be needed. In fact, our students continue to come for lunch, and bring their siblings with them!

As New Jersey’s largest anti-hunger and anti-poverty organization, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey fights hunger and poverty by assisting those in need and seeking long-term solutions.

Our neighbors in need are feeling the economic impact of COVID-19, and many are finding themselves struggling for the first time. The crisis will have an unprecedented impact on our neighbors in need today, in the immediate future and beyond.

    • The FoodBank is already seeing a 20% increase in demand for food assistance, overall, with some of our agencies reporting an increase upwards of 50% in the most hard-hit areas, like Newark.
    • According to a recent Monmouth University poll, roughly 1 in 3 Americans (about 35%) has experienced economic pain due to the loss of income or of their job altogether as a result of COVID-19.
    • Also according to Feeding America, an estimated 17.1 million additional people will experience food insecurity during the crisis, a 46% increase over the 40 million Americans who are normally food insecure.
    • Donated food to CFBNJ has slowed and food supply chains have become more competitive, resulting in prices that are 20% higher on average. This amounts to about $500,000 in additional food costs every three weeks - so our greatest need now is funds.
