Since 2010, the Maine Walks with Haiti 5K walk/run has been held in Portland, Maine, to help build a sustainable health system in North Haiti that maximizes local planning and control. It is our largest annual fundraiser, and its success is essential to funding our work throughout the year. As the number of COVID-19 cases in Haiti rises, the need for our help is more urgent than in recent years.
The situation in Haiti before COVID-19 was already precarious—a weak health system, severe poverty, and political instability have severely destabilized the nation. Now Haitians are trying to respond to the threat of a major epidemic as well. Nevertheless, there are many who are working hard to improve the situation. They inspire us. And we would like you to join us in making a difference.
In June 2020, Maine Walks with Haiti was transformed into a month-virtual event renamed We Walk with Haiti in response to social distancing restrictions enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Supporters were asked to participate by setting up personal fundraising pages, becoming a sponsor, or making a direct donation. We are pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we surpassed our We Walk with Haiti fundraising goal of $50,000 by more than $10,000!
We could not have done it without the help of our staff, board members, advisors, and, most importantly, donors who responded to our call for help by the hundreds. There is a traditional saying in Haitian Creole: “Piti piti zwazo a fè nich li.” (“Little by little, the bird makes its nest.”) Little by little, bit by bit, we came together to make the We Walk with Haiti campaign a resounding success.
But our work is not done. Cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Haiti, and the nation does not have a sustainable health system that would enable our healthcare partners to operate without outside help. Konbit Sante is committed to helping our partners for the duration of the pandemic and beyond. You can help by donating today.
Mesi anpil! (Thank you!)
