HORTICULTURAL CARE

The 12-acre Railyard Park boasts 28 individual gardens, consisting primarily of native, drought-resistant plants. The park's gardens offer an oasis of beauty for park visitors in the heart of downtown Santa Fe's Railyard District. Many of these gardens demand specialized horticultural care, which brings adult and student volunteers into the park to connect with their local environment.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Volunteer Yardmasters meet twice a week, all-year round and rotate through different areas of the park's gardens. The Railyard Park also offers a venue for community service groups from various schools and summer programs, where students have the opportunity to give back to their community, while learning valuable job skills such as gardening, the proper use of tools, and plant biology.  In the summer, when the need is highest, volunteers work in the park six days a week.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

The Railyard Park Conservancy's outdoor science classroom is an innovative opportunity for school groups to learn in nature. We are also starting into our fourth year of specialized early-childhood toddler programs. For student aged children, field trips to the park are facilitated by staff, and students of all ages and backgrounds can spend a day out of the classroom, in fresh air, exploring the park as a living science laboratory. In the food gardens, youth learn about traditional and sustainable gardening while experiencing planting, tending and harvesting. For example, the park's Community Waffle Garden is shaped, planted and weeded by students, and the food that grows is healthy, organic and available for the community to pick and enjoy.

PUBLIC ART PROGRAM

The Railyard Art Project (RAP) facilitates the rotating, temporary public art in the Railyard Park and Plaza. The RAP committee, a group of volunteer artists, arts educators and Railyard stakeholders review and select artist proposals for implementing in and engaging the Railyard. Public art projects in the Railyard generally emphasize community interaction while speaking to cultural, environmental and social issues pertaining to Santa Fe and it's history.
