Over the last few years, both on and off the field, the University of Notre Dame Rugby Program has experienced rapid growth. With the growth and interest in the sport of rugby, comes growing costs to provide the necessary standard of care, safety, health and wellness, and overall experience for our students. It is a priority to ensure all of our students are safely prepared to compete, limit the risk of injury, and in the unfortunate event that one does occur, provide the best possible treatment and rehabilitation needed.
As a club sport, the team does not have access to the Notre Dame Athletic Department medical staff and must fully fund this initiative independently. During the last 4 years, the program has increased the medical coverage, by ensuring a certified athletic trainer is available at all team practices, and home matches, as well as select travel competitions. The team aspires to further increase athletic trainer access to include additional off-field clinic, prehab, recovery and treatment time.
Furthermore, the rugby program strives to provide the best possible experience for our students. The team competes in USA Rugby D1A, the nation’s top competition, and travels annually to the four corners of the United States. The team feels strongly that these opportunities and travel experiences not be limited to those who can afford the necessary fare, but rather be inclusive for all participants.
Some of the most transformational experiences for our students, while at the University of Notre Dame, occur while traveling with the rugby program. Over the last 4 years, our students have experienced world class institutions, such as United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, and Stanford University and has taken our students to iconic locations such as Bermuda, San Francisco/Alcatraz, Arizona, California, New York, Philadelphia. Without the support of our friends of the program, we would never be able to provide these incredible experiences for our students.
