My wife, Sarah, is a strong and brave woman. She has been dealing with bile duct cancer since diagnosis in July 2020. She endured four-plus months of chemo and has most recently been taking gene therapy medication and has had two procedures involving implanting Y90 in both lobes of her liver.

In late July I am once again participating in RAGBRAI, the Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa, to raise awareness of this little-known disease as well as raise funds for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation so others may benefit from your generosity. Sarah may not benefit directly and/or indirectly, but others will. I appreciate any donation you might make–big, small or medium–as a way to honor my wonderful wife, a wonderful mother and grandmother, as well as help others who deal with this rare form of cancer. It's a way of paying forward. The ride is 450 miles. You can donate per mile or a lump some. I appreciate whatever you choose to do.

RAGBRAI is not a race. It is week-long event or "happening" that brings together thousands of people in harmony from all around our wonderful country and the world. It starts in western Iowa near the Missouri River and ends in eastern Iowa along the Mississippi River. In between, the bike ride covers 450-plus miles over seven days with overnight and day visits to numerous communities along the way. The generous spirit of Iowans is amazing and this event doesn't take place without their generous spirit sharing what they appreciate with others. In a week's time there will be 20,000-plus riders, many of whom will meet for the first time and become friends.

Sarah is the most generous person I know. She gives of her time, talent and treasure and doesn't know the word, "no." It's not in her vocabulary. . .when it comes to helping others. A former AFS exchange student who lived in Glasgow, Scotland, she is a woman of the world who loves to travel and has expanded my world view mightily. Thanks to her, we've hosted 14 exchange students, which has been a great blessing. Some of our former exchange students are featured in the photos.

The CCF has been a great benefit to Sarah so giving back seems the natural and proper thing to do....so that others will benefit. I am so impressed with CCF and what the organization does that embarking on this adventure is what I need to do.

The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) is the only non-profit organization in North America exclusively dedicated to finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).

Approximately 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed each year with this hard-to-diagnose, difficult-to-treat, fatal type of cancer.

Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare but deadly cancer that has very little name recognition or awareness. Due to this lack of visibility, it is often overlooked as symptoms can mimic those of other illnesses and diagnosis comes too late. Conventional cancer treatments remain ineffective against cholangiocarcinoma, and most people diagnosed with advanced disease have less than a 5% chance of surviving at least five years. While almost 2 out of 3 people with bile duct cancer are 65 or older, people of nearly any age can be diagnosed. There has been an alarming increase in the past decade of young individuals being diagnosed in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s.
