Dr. Gregg Schimmel Fund for Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research Fellows

Dr. Gregg Schimmel was diagnosed with MCC in January 2009. In 8 1/2 years of coping with MCC, he's had conventional treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery), took immunotherapy drugs (Keytruda and Yervoy) and participated in several clinical trials, including T-cells and Natural Killer Cells. Unfortunately, these efforts reached a point where they were no longer effective and Dr. Schimmel is currently in hospice care. Dr. Schimmel is a clinical psychologist who used his personal experience with MCC and strong desire to help others to co-found a Seattle-based support group for MCC patients and family members. Dr. Schimmel has been married for 35 years to Dr. Monica Bristow (also a clinical psychologist). They have three adult children - Josh, Ally, and Matt and one grandson on the way - Dashell.

Dr. Schimmel always valued research and the importance of blending it with clinical practice. The goal of the fund that bears his name is to support Fellows involved with research and patient care working in the Paul Nghiem Lab. There is still much to learn about MCC. It is only through research that the keys to unlocking the best forms of treatment will be found.

Please consider donating to this fund in Gregg's honor.
