Mission - FCHS advocates for animal welfare in the community and provides affordable services, resources and programs to help responsible pet owners keep their pets healthy, happy and in life-long homes.

Unity Funds -   The Frederick County Humane Society’s (FCHS) Emergency Assistance Program provides needed financial assistance when a pet is facing an illness or possible medical emergency and the family is unable to afford those costs without help. This program provides funding to help pay for emergency care, with the payments going directly to the vet.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 67% of Americans own pets. Other studies put that percentage even higher. The fact is more Americans own pets than those who don't. The ALICE Survival budget doesn't include owning a pet, yet those with financial difficulties are often the ones who get the most joy from having a furry friend.

These Frederick County residents love their pets; they consider their pets to be family members. Unfortunately, most people/families with limited financial abilities aren't able to save money for an unexpected pet emergency. They need to make the choice of going into further debt to pay for emergency care for their pet. When they can’t afford the necessary care, they might have to face the loss of their furry family member. That loss can cause health and mental issues for the humans making the decision of ‘how much a pet is worth’ or being forced to allow their pet to die.

Numerous studies have shown pets have positive health impacts on people.  From lowering the chance at heart disease to calming anxiety, the effects are wide-ranging and long-lasting. Some studies show that children who grew up with pets have fewer allergies as they get older. Others show a positive impact on the social interactions of people with social and anxiety disorders. Yet others show that people who own pets are generally healthier than those who don’t.

Working with United Way’s Unity Campaign will help FCHS raise funds for this important program while providing connections with other nonprofits and community members.  It will also help FCHS share information on this (and other) programs that benefit community members.
