17,000 Frederick County adults are functionally illiterate. This includes American-born adults who can't read or write, and immigrants who cannot speak, read, or write English fluently. These skills are fundamental to work, prosperity, health, and family stability.

The Literacy Council of Frederick County's trained volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring to assist these individuals, as well as small classes focusing on conversation skills, pronunciation, basic computer skills, and workplace English. Tutor training workshops are available for new volunteers.

Each year adult learners achieve goals such as increased independence, better jobs, access to health care, the ability to help their children in school, and U.S. citizenship. All these help to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of our whole community.

The Literacy Council seeks your support.

For 55 years, the Literacy Council has worked in Frederick County to serve adult learners. In that time, more than 8,000 adult learners have achieved their goals, but illiteracy remains a prevalent problem in the Frederick community. The implications of low literacy are significant and directly affect financial stability for individuals and their families. In fact, anecdotal data shows that the majority of our students fall within ALICE household metrics, experiencing financial hardships, are unemployed or underemployed, or working multiple part-time minimum wage jobs. While these are multifaceted and complex issues, adult literacy is the one factor that can have a positive impact across the board.

The Unity Campaign will help the Literacy Council of Frederick County raise the financial support necessary to provide literacy programs and services,  to the many county residents in need of reading and English language instruction by providing an efficient and community-wide platform to raise awareness and much-needed funds.

Support from the Unity Campaign will be used for our basic literacy (native English speakers) and English as a Second Language programs with particular focus on two essential areas: working with low literate parents with children in Frederick County Title I Schools and improving financial stability through workplace literacy courses. The parent education program will strive to increase literacy and English language skills of parents of young children to enhance early childhood development, school readiness and school success. The workplace literacy program will help to increase workplace literacy and English skills and improve employment opportunities, decrease strain on financial welfare systems, and help provide a long-term, lasting solution to financial stability.

The funds raised from our previous years of participation in the Unity Campaign have been critical to our programs, and represent our largest source of donations from individuals. Our participation has connected us with other organizations whose clients may be in need of our services. The Campaign has made an impact on raising awareness about illiteracy as a community issue and one that prevents many Frederick County adults from achieving financial stability.
