Help us recognize and assist our students who go above and beyond!
The BSS Dare to Achieve Scholarship provides financial support and recognition to students who have managed to attend college in spite of exceptional challenges, and who in spite of those obstacles have given back to their community in important ways.
The past year has proven to be challenging for us all, but not more than for our students who have shouldered financial constraints even in “normal” times. With the introduction of the global pandemic, the most basic needs of our students have become compromised through no fault of their own.
Past recipients have shared how this scholarship impacted their life and time in college. Basic needs were met, including additional school supplies to accommodate their distance learning. While others relied on the funds for food and assisting with rent. Many revealed they lived below poverty level, were unable to ask for support from their family due to their financial limitations, and most are first generation college students. The unknown effect of being a recipient of these scholarships is that it provided students with a feeling of belonging, one student explaining that Chico State has helped me in growing as an individual and is my home away from home.
The collective theme of all the BSS Dare to Achieve Scholarship recipients is one of persistence, determination, and genuine appreciation. This scholarship was established to provide recognition to dedicated students who have declared a major in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and whom have demonstrated financial need. They have faced significant odds in attending university, and who nonetheless have channeled their energies toward serving their community.
With your help, these students can focus on completing their assignments, reports, and finals, rather than worrying where money for books, food or rent will come from. As we get to know our students better, we are moved by the number of amazing stories of perseverance against overwhelming odds. We are committed to increasing the number of students who receive this award, but we can do so only in partnership with our generous donors. It is our time to make a real difference in our students’ lives. Please consider helping us help our students by making a gift on Giving Day – March 3, 2021.
This year, the college of Behavioral and Social Sciences will match all donations up to $2,000! Thank you!
