Support history students as they participate in immersion trips and conferences that broaden their knowledge and let them experience history beyond the classroom.

The History Club/Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society) is planning two trips for spring 2018. The first is a daylong trip to San Francisco to see the acclaimed Teotihuacán temporary exhibit at the De Young Museum (http://deyoung.famsf.org/exhibitions/teotihuacan-city-water-city-fire).

Our second trip will be to the Regional Conference of Phi Alpha Theta in April at Santa Clara University. Expenses for this overnight trip include hotel rooms plus the rental of a 14-seater van. This conference allows students and faculty to come together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication.

De Young Museum ($1,000):

Your gift of any amount is greatly appreciated by our students.

Total overall costs for both trips depend on the number of participating students, but we estimate that the San Francisco/Teotihuacán trip will cost around $1,000, and the Santa Clara conference will also run almost $1000.

We estimate the costs to be $25 a person for admission to the museum, plus $500 to cover the cost of renting two 14-seater vans (plus gas and parking).

$25 will purchase admission for one student

$50 will purchase admission for two students

$125 will purchase admission for five students

$250 will help fund admission for 10 students

$500 will help fund admission for 20 students

$500 will help fund van rentals and gas/parking expenses

$1,000 will help fund the whole excursion for students

Regional Conference of Phi Alpha Theta ($1,000)

$250 will help fund a 14-seat van rental and gas/parking expenses

$500 will help fund hotel expenses for the participating students

$1,000 will help fund the whole excursion for students

There are two student organizations affiliated with the History Department at CSU, Chico. The History Club is open to all who wish to join, whether they are history majors or not. Phi Alpha Theta is the local chapter of a national history honor society. Both offer students the opportunity to become involved with history beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, this group hosts book talks, a careers forum, trivia nights, trips, and movie screenings that always open up new discussions on the subject of history.

Each semester the club takes one or two trips to historical sights of interest. Past trips have included touring the New Clairvaux Monastery in Vina, Sutter’s Fort, the Emigrant Museum and Donner Summit, and San Francisco’s famous Chinatown and Russian District. Members of Phi Alpha Theta are eligible to participate in a yearly regional conference where students can present original work and research and compete for awards against other history students across northern California.
