Support Men of Chico!

Men of Chico is an academic retention program housed in the STAR Center that aims to empower, guide, and support men of color at CSU, Chico. The program seeks to instill a sense of cultural, communal, and academic esteem in order to produce scholarly-astute change agents. This program exists to ensure persistence, academic excellence, and an improved career trajectory for all participating students.

One way we support our students is by ensuring each student has professional attire. Our goal is to cover this cost for every student in this year's cohort.

Men of Chico provides an equitable pathway to recruit, retain, and graduate a diverse student body by emphasizing a sense of belonging through social engagement. Through these programs, students participate in one semester of open programming developed to expand their socio-emotional intelligence and extend their comfort zones in places and spaces where they may have previously felt unwelcome. This is followed by a semester in which students follow a cohort model to examine theoretical and practical approaches of leadership from the lens of men of color.

This experience provides them with a vision of the future they are working towards. An integral part of facilitating the transition from student to professional is affirming a career-focused identity. Students participate in workshops on professional attire, résumé building, and interview preparation before attending a CSU, Chico career fair. Upon cohort completion, these students serve as mentors within the program and their respective communities. Furthermore, they continue to exude an expectation of excellence amongst their peers.

The STAR Center exists to provide a place for academic preparation and support for historically underserved students at CSU, Chico. Our two flagship academic retention programs are Men of CHICO and Women of Excellence. These programs aim to empower, guide, and support students of color in order to ensure persistence, retention, academic excellence, and post-baccalaureate trajectories for students of color at CSU, Chico.
