USC Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program (DHOP) is a completely student-run organization that travels around the globe to provide high quality free dental care to underserved communities. We are committed to bringing together USC dental students, faculty and alumni in partnership with local and international humanitarian groups in order to achieve a common goal of providing high quality periodontal treatment, operative dentistry, and oral surgery to those who need it most. In addition to these services, we aim to empower our patients through education of oral hygiene and preventive care.
Since 2010, we have traveled to Honduras, Colombia, Kenya, Jamaica, Philippines, Belize, Cambodia, Nicaragua, and Panama to provide care. With the support of our dental students and experienced faculty, we strive to ensure that top standard of dental care is provided for every single patient. During our most recent humanitarian trip to Bocas del Toro, Panama our team was able to successfully provide 1,964 dental procedures to 704 patients over the course of 6 clinic days. This year, we are excited travel back to the Philippines to provide our services in Manila!
We plan to continue to travel to other countries in which there is a great need for dental care and our planning is well underway for our upcoming trip to the Philippines in December! We are planning to take a team of 50 USC dental students and 10 USC faculty and dentists to provide various treatment options. Each year we aim to beat our last year's goal of dental services provided and to most importantly leave a lasting, positive impact on the individuals and communities we are fortunate to serve.
The costs for each trip approximately total $100,000; donations cover the expenses associated with purchasing supplies/equipment and running clinic while students and faculty pay for their own flights, housing accommodations, and other travel expenses. Together, with your support, we can not only help provide services to an underserved population, but also advance the growth of future dental professionals through clinical and leadership experience!
