Here at the Academic Literacies Center, we strive to create an environment that encourages participation, acceptance, and a willingness to ask questions. Our center provides students with academic support so they can be successful in their college careers and beyond. We need your help to continue our efforts. We provide free snacks to students so that they don't have to work on an empty stomach as well as tools such as whiteboards to allow for greater visual learning. We would like to further expand our services by purchasing affordable headphones for our center computers, tablets for a quicker check-in process, a program called NetTutor to continue supporting students after-hours, and a scholarship to help our tutors afford textbooks. Nearly 20% of college students report having a disability, but many do not go on to complete their degrees due to institutional barriers, including financial barriers. 25% of college students with disabilities leave college after one year compared to 14% of those without disabilities. Students with disabilities can choose to take a reduced course load, but that often means reduced financial and fewer scholarship opportunities. Student Message: My Name is Nicole O’Brien. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Ferris State University. I also work for Educational Counseling & Disability Services at Ferris. I am writing to you in hopes you will consider supporting a disability scholarship at Ferris State University. Please take a second to imagine someone with a disability saying to you, “Our society is not made for me.” Their shoulders slumped. A dejected look on their face. What would you think. How would you respond. This is a reality that nearly 20% of all college students in America must live with every day, including myself. I was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP). My CP is such that I cannot feed myself, dress myself, open doors, or get a Kleenex box if need be. I am reliant upon personal care with nearly all activities of daily living. To graduate from college, students with disabilities must endure added expenses in areas such as personal care assistants, transportation, and technology. When their families cannot help, disparities loom even larger. Many students like myself must dedicate a considerable amount of time to simple tasks like getting out of bed, getting dressed and going to the bathroom; making it difficult to maintain a full-time class schedule. By supporting a disability scholarship, you are investing in the independence and inclusion of all students with disabilities at Ferris State University and helping to further their personal and professional development. ReFOCUS at Ferris provides students on academic probation with educational, social, and financial support to focus on having a successful semester, developing a stronger sense of belonging, and regaining good academic standing. The Mathematics Department at Ferris State University wants to offer an additional resource to support our students in their math courses on campus by creating an inclusive and safe space for all students to ask questions, learn, and improve their confidence and skills in a subject that is often feared by many. Many institutions have tutoring centers that focus on math only. Creating a space such as this here at Ferris would encourage students to frequently visit the Mathematics Department where faculty offices are also conveniently located. ¡Hola! This is Spanish Professor Eric Warner and I am helping our Ferris-Costa Rica Study Abroad 2024 group fundraise to support their experience! This year, we have a record number of students who will be Studying Abroad in Costa Rica with Prof. Lucero Flores-Páez, a Costa Rican instructor, and me! We seek help to defer costs for students during the educational 4-week Spanish Immersion program where students take classes at Academia Tica and live with Spanish-speaking host families. The Malik Kingsby Scholarship is intended to provide opportunity to students who experience inequity or barriers to education because of racism and heterosexism (homophobia) and/or cissexism (transphobia). Malik Kingsby was a student staffer of the Ferris State University LGBTQ+ Resource Center and Williams Auditorium, the president of the Art History Club, and a member of Psi Sigma Kappa. His legacy includes warmth and inclusion of all students in every space he entered, service to QTBIPOC students, and campus-wide education about Two Spirit, same gender loving, and LGBTQ+ people of color.

We seek to promote professional bilingualism, love for language and travel, Study Abroad, Internships that impact the community, intercultural awareness, and global camaraderie! We are so close to permanently endowing our Spanish for the Professions Scholarship! Without a doubt, we are confident that it will happen during this year's One Day for Dawgs on April 10, 2024! Some updates on our program that keep fueling our passion for what we do: 1) The Spanish for the Professions Scholarship Endowment is less than $1,000 away from becoming a reality as we are currently at $24,240 (and need $25,000 to make it permanent). Of course, we'd like to keep growing it for even more impact! Many thanks to all who have already helped us reach that milestone!!! 2) A record number of Study Abroad students will be going to Costa Rica for Spanish Immersion in 2024 for 4 weeks! 3) Recent Ferris Spanish for the Professions students are/will be in Spanish graduate programs while teaching Spanish with fully funded Master's degrees in Spanish! ¡Felicidades, Paige Williams y Ryan Kachnowski! 4) Dual enrollment at Rockford High School has been ongoing for over a year now with former immersion students! 5) Washington D.C.
